Memories for February 8, 2017

Taken from 25 years ago, PCN, Feb., 1942.

Representative Dudley Jones was completely aroused over the tendency of railroad station agents to tell people the trains were on time when they were as much as five or six hours late. He was trying to get a bill through the legislature forcing agents to give the customers thorough reports on this condition.

***

A midnight high school basketball game was played against Poplar, the hour being due to a delayed train bearing the visiting players. Malta won, 23-14. Another basketball note concerned Burner Survant who was tossing them into the net for Shattuck Military School at Faribault, Minn. Survant scored 15 points in a single game.

***

There was excitement in the suburbs when a group of children crawled aboard a hayburner delivery wagon owned by the Malta Mercantile Company when the driver was making a delivery. By the time the runaway was halted the frightened beast had scattered children and groceries over a wide area but nobody was hurt.

***

Dr. Clay was called to Harlem to assist in curbing an outbreak of typhoid fever. More than 100 cases were reported but deaths were few.

District Judge adopts "get tough" policy for young drinkers

Juveniles apprehended with liquor in their possession will have two courses open to them, either tell where they got it or go to court, County Attorney Don Cole announced today.

Judge Thomas Dignan advised the County Attorney and other law enforcement officers that any juveniles arrested with beer or liquor in their possession, that the County attorney is ordered to file juvenile proceedings in District Court - unless the offender tells where or from whom the illegal beverages were obtained.

An additional order in this "get tough" policy authorizes the juvenile officer, first having received the permission of the District Judge, to jail any uncooperative offender overnight.

Phillips County's garbage is on the road to Valley County

The new County garbage program is working well, with no problems loading or unloading, according to Commissioner Sherman Doucette.

Average tonnage hauled 63 tons per month from the container sites (soon to be nine). So far the average cost per mile for fuel for the truck has been 18-cents. The truck has driven over 3,000 miles in January to and from the Valley County landfill and container sites.

Street Talk

Question: Do you remember ever having a winter like this one?

Editor's Note: The average temperature from January 29 through February 4, 1992, was 57°.

Marianne Askvold: No! Never in my lifetime. I don't expect to see another one!

John Matovich: Not quite. 1931 was open like this, and dry, but colder. In the spring there was no green showing anywhere. It was dry summer, too!

Martin Sandvik: No, never. I don't think we'll ever see another like it.

Myrtle Pabst: No, I never have.
