Jap marriage with white not valid in Montana

The state supreme court, upholding the decision of the 11th District Court of Flathead County, denied the validity in Montana of a marriage in the state of Washington between a white woman and a Japanese alien.

The woman, Mrs. Vivian Takahashi of Havre, contested the appointment of James Jorgensen Jr., public administrator of Flathead County, as administrator of the estate of Shun T. Takahashi, who died July 23, 1941.

The majority opinion of the high court held that, in view of Takahashi' long residence in Montana, both before and after the marriage in Spokane May 18, 1915, the fact that the wedding was solemnized there was an attempt to circumvent the Montana law prohibiting such marriages. The law prohibiting white persons and Japanese was passed in 1919 and held that such marriages contracted elsewhere by residents of the state are not valid in Montana.

Mustangs in playoffs again - 19th straight

When the Malta Mustangs host the Cut Bank Wolves Saturday at home in Malta, it will mark the 19th straight year in a row they've made the first round of the playoffs under Coach Scott King and crew.

It's a record that many of the other teams in the first round of the Class B football playoffs should well envy.

Only three times in that run have a Mustangs team failed to move on and times they've advanced to the semifinal game.

And they've gone further than that. Five of King's teams has reached the state finals and three times they've brought home the top prize. The last one came just a year ago against Loyola Missoula.
