***

"Chick" Whitcomb had a rather exciting experience this morning while returning from the hole talent play at Dodson. About four miles from Malta, the vacuum feed on his Buick caught fire and burned up so that the car was out of commission.

***

Ray Campbell was assisting with the work in the sheriff's office during the rush with the draft work.

We received our first fall of snow and it covers the ground like a white blanket. There is nearly enough for sleighing and in the country, it has a drifted considerably.

Victory tax effective Jan. 1, 1943

After Dec. 31, every person earning more than $12 a week or $642 a year will commence paying a larger share of the government's war bill. Provisions of the victory tax, which reaches all above the specified limits, are being studied by the internal revenue offices.

The victory tax will affect virtually every wage earner, and the revenue office advises persons to revise their budgets to meet not only this tax but the increased 1492 income tax.

Serial numbers on county car plates remain unchanged

One bill the 1943 legislature won't have to worry about is the perennial measure to reallocate automobile license plate series to the counties on the basis of their present population.

The war - and the shortage of steel - took care of that, the board of examiners attaches state in reporting that 1943 "cover plates" were ready for distribution to counties.

The 'cover plates," about two inches wide, with a red background and white (1943" will bolt over the "west" side of the black and white plates currently in use.

Cattle deaths cleared up by sheriff's office

On completing the investigation into the death of seven head of cattle found floating in Beaver Creek on the Sowers Ranch, members of the sheriff's office and the state veterinarian reached the conclusion that the cattle had perished on the ice. There was no water in their lungs nor poison in their stomachs. Recent temperatures were low enough to freeze the water and it is through the cattle slipped on the ice when seeking water.

Patrol reports two accidents

Another deer was the only casualty of the two accidents reported this week by the Montana Highway Patrol. William Somerville of Glaslyn, Sask., and three passengers were traveling toward Malta about 4 p.m. on Highway 242 eight and a half miles north of Malta when his car struck and killed a deer. None of the occupants of the car were injured and moderate damage was done to the automobile.

On Sunday, about noon. Jody Cochran of Lodgepole apparently went to sleep at the wheel of his pickup and went off the road. The truck rolled over and came to rest on its top. The accident occurred on a county road about 15 miles south of Dodson. Neither Cochran nor his wife was injured. Moderate damage was reported to the pickup.
