Jaynes survives crash, wins Fair AMX

The 104th Phillips County Fair's AMX event did not fail to entertain as the event featured thrills, spills, crashes and even a fire.

The event started with a startling crash as Great Fall's Jamie Jaynes, formerly of Dodson, lost control of his vehicle in the hot laps, crashed into the barricade and peeled off the roof of his car.

"So coming out of the east corner my right rear tire went over the berm and it just caught and flung my car into the fence," Jaynes said. "I think just the thought of not being able to race for the rest of the day got me going, but after a discussion with the president, Keith, we were able to get my car back together and get it going."

Jaynes was able to bounce back and later win the Super Main event, edging out runner-up Mike Plouffe, who had won the opening heat of the Super Class.

"It feels great, I've had a lot of bad luck over the past couple years and it just feels really good to get a win, and a fair win makes it that much better," Jaynes said.

In winning the event Jamie solidified his spot in the Jaynes family tradition.

"It's kind of nice to uphold the Jaynes tradition of taking the A main of the super stocks, since my dad (Rob) won, my uncle Russell won it, and my brother Brett have all won it," Jaynes said. "It's nice for my brother and I to be up there with a couple of local racing Legends."

Dustin McKinney won the A Main Stock Class, giving him a three-peat of the event at the PC Fair. He won in 2017 and 2018.

"I am feeling really, really good," McKinney said about the win. "I got out there, stayed in the front and didn't look back again. There are some good drivers and good racers out there today."

McKinney was able to win the opening draw, which gave him pole position at the start of the event.

"I got lucky and drew the lucky number 13, which happens to be my birthday," he said.

He knew that luck wouldn't be enough given the talent around him.

"Travis Anderson is a hard driver, so I knew I had to get a good start," McKinney said. "Anthony Jaynes was in the back and also Gerome Lamb. There was a couple of drivers behind me and I knew I had to make a good start and get out in front."

He had to overcome one obstacle during the final lap in order to win, as he clipped a stuck car after having to lockup his brakes in the final turn.

Anthony Jaynes took second in the Super Main event, and Luke Brown was third. McKinney went up to the Super Class after winning the A Main and took third in the Super Main. Frank Kindle was fourth in the Super Main.

Bill Simanton won the B Main Stock Class. Justin Lamb was second, Darryl Demarais was third, Josh Whiteley was fourth, Keith Cowan was fifth and Gage Abrahamson was sixth.

Tyson Jones won the C Main Stock Class, Scott Hould was second, Jared Sienkowski was third, Robert Kindle was fourth, and David Jaynes was fifth.

Megan Raty took first place in the Powderpuff Race driving her boyfriend Gerome Lamb's car. Corine Hould was second, Raven Bear took third and Tamela Abrahamson took fourth.

"I just asked Gerome (Lamb) where I needed to be on the track and made a gameplan and went for it," Raty said. "I wasn't out there to win, just to drive good."

During the first half of the first lap, Raty and the other drivers seemed to take it nice and slow, but then the group got heavier on the pedal the second time around.

"After I passed those first girls, I was feeling pretty confident," Raty said. "This is the first time that I have driven in the races before. It was a little different than just driving on dirt roads. I had to pick up my game and show Gerome up."

Flint Schaaf won the Pitman race. Jerey McEwen was second and Gabe Laroque was third.
