March 11, 1920

Jesse Giles of Dodson succumbed to a short illness in Malta.

North Dakota was in the grip of a severe blizzard, the worst in over 40 years, with 60-mile winds, four inches of snow, and heavy livestock losses reported.

Fire destroyed the Victor Johnson residence in the south part of town.

Trains from the west were delayed by spring floods in the vicinity of Havre.

County farmers were waging war on the rapidly increasing gopher population.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Sullivan of Malta.

Mr. and Mrs. George Baeth were the parents of a daughter.

***

Livestock ranges in the Little Rocky Mountains were said to be in excellent condition.

March 8, 1945

Eighth meetings are held by club at Whitewater

The Silver Thimble Club held its eighth meeting on Feb. 27 at the home of Beverley Olsen. A total of 10 members and Mrs. Domke and Marian Ochsner were present. The next meeting will be held at Kathleen Murdock's home on March 13.

Son of Malta man missing in Europe

Eugene Gwartney, son of Helen Gwartney of Malta, has been missing in action over enemy occupied Europe since Jan. 17.

Gwartney, a grandson of Mrs. Frank Ellison and a nephew of B. M. Phillips of Landusky, was in the army air corps and his father is a World War I veteran.

Joe Judge takes final pilot training

Learning the latest tricks in repertoire of a combat fighter pilot, Flight Officer Joseph P. Judge Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Judge of Malta, is now undergoing final training at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs, Colo., preceding his assignment to an army air forces fighter unit overseas.

Two county men wounded in action

Two servicemen from the Harb community have recently been wounded in action on the western front in Europe.

Wallace Ohs, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Ohs, has been awarded the Purple Heart for battle wounds, and Leo Lubbers, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lubbers, is in a hospital receiving treatment for battle wounds.

Both young men attended the Harb School.

Dodson is grade tournament winner

The Dodson Grade School captured first honors at the grade school basketball tournament held at the City Hall in Malta last Saturday. The Dodson team defeated Malta for the title. Third place went to the Saco graders with their defeat of South Wagner.

March 5, 1970

Malta Mustangs won free throw trophy

The Malta Mustangs have won the Free Throw trophy offered by Perry Painting to the Phillips County basketball squad making the greatest percentage of free throws in the district basketball tournament competition.

The Mustangs had 74-percent, Saco had 67-percent, and Dodson and Whitewater each had 61-percent.

Veseth named top "Conservation Rancher"

Mons Veseth, South Phillips County rancher, was named the Outstanding Conservation Rancher for 1969 at the annual meeting of the Phillips Soil and Water Conservation District held last Friday at the Malta National Guard Armory. Veseth gave a brief account of over 50 years of ranching in the area.

Lynn Goertz of Wagner was named to receive the Oustanding Treelot award.

Denny Goodheart wins spot in National Golden Gloves

Dennis Goodheart, son of Sen. and Mrs. B. J. Goodheart of Malta, won the middleweight championship at the 19th annual Midland Empire Golden Gloves tournament last weekend in Billings. Goodheart, a 1965 graduate of Malta High School, will next fight at the National Golden Gloves tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

This week at the Villa

Thursday and Friday will feature The Savage Wild, a movie "where the trails end and adventure begins...only the strongest survive" staring Gordon Eastman.

On Saturday and Sunday, Walt Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People is a "laugh-filled adventure to dazzle your eyes" starring Albert Sharpe, Janet Munro, and Sean Connery.

March 8, 1995

May wedding planned

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Enerson of Malta and Mr. and Mrs. Les Nelson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Denise RaNae to Thomas Gary Black, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Black, of Malta. A May 6 wedding is planned in Malta.
