Rough weekend for Phillips County boys basketball

It was a tough week for Phillips County boys varsity basketball teams.

The Malta Mustangs fell 71-50 to the Rocky Boy Stars on Thursday, January 6, in Rocky Boy.

The Dodson Coyotes fell 55-35 to Roy-Winifred on Friday, January 7, in Dodson. The Coyotes also lost to the Poplar Indians 71-41 in Poplar on Saturday, January 8.

The Mavericks lost a pair of games, first falling 55-27 to the Glasgow Scotties in Glasgow on Thursday, and then 64-31 to the Scobey Spartans on Friday.

In Malta's loss to Rocky Boy, the Mustangs were unable to overcome a 20-4 deficit in the first quarter. Rocky Boy also outscored Malta 17-12 in the second quarter, 27-18 in the third quarter. The Mustangs outscored Rocky Boy 17-6 in the fourth.

Malta's home game against the Roundup Panthers scheduled for Saturday, January 8, was postponed. Unofficial word is that the Panthers were fighting colds.

In Dodson's loss to Roy-Winifred, the Coyotes' offense struggled to score in the first half and fell 20-9 at halftime. The team held Roy to five points in the third, while scoring 13 points of their own, and saw the lead midway through the third quarter. The Coyotes were then outscored 30-13 in the fourth quarter.

Alex Werk led Dodson with 13 points. Cash KillEagle had six points, and Kadin Racine had five points.

In Dodson's loss to Poplar, the Coyotes were led by Sebastian Best who had 13 points. Mikey Jaynes had 10 points, and Werk had seven points.

In the Maverick's loss to Glasgow, North Country was led by Aiden Albus, who scored 12 points. Trey Johnson had five points.

Albus also led the Mavericks in their loss to Scobey with 13 points. Johnson had eight points, Kade Strommen had five points, and Blaine Downing had five points.

The Mavs are scheduled to play Lustre Christian in Lustre on Friday, January 14, at 7:30 p.m. They will then travel to Hinsdale to host the Frazer Bearcubs on Saturday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Malta is scheduled to face the Poplar Indians in Poplar on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs will then come home to host the Shelby Coyotes at 4 p.m.

Dodson is scheduled to face Hays-Lodge Pole in Hays on Tuesday, January 11, at 6:30 p.m. They will then travel to Frazer to take on the Bearcubs at 7:30 p.m. The Coyotes are also scheduled to host Lustre in Dodson on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
