Malta Speech and Drama Performs at State Meet

Both members of the Malta Speech and Drama team qualified for the State Meet held at Huntley Project High School on January 28-29.

While neither of the girls made it to the finals, Head Coach Anna LaBrie said, “I am very proud of both girls. They have grown so much over the season.”

Though senior Emily Rettinger didn’t make it out of the first round, Coach LaBrie had nothing but gratitude for her. “It was a big risk for Emily to try something new, being a senior and this was her first year in speech. She did a great job and got better as the year progressed.”

Junior Izzie Hallenberg made it through to the semis and finished in 9th place.

Hallenberg said, “Emily and I had a blast at state! It was the most nerve-racking thing I have ever done. We both put our heart and soul into our pieces.”

Coach LaBrie said, “I am very excited to see what Izzie will do next year with a state competition under her belt.”

When asked how she felt about her season in speech and drama, Hallenberg said, “We met a lot of great kids throughout the year. Everyone was so supportive and encouraged everyone else to do great. I had my Grandma Berta at almost every meet and my mom was constantly texting and checking in. I really got to know my piece and I felt like I put it on super well. I’m really glad I got the experience. I’m also glad it’s done, I’m super tired!”
