Malta students claim top three spots in math contest

Malta’s Lacy Lodmell placed first out of the 14 math students who participated from Malta High School in the American High School Mathematics Examination Test.

Lodmell will receive a medal for his accomplishment and his name will be added to a permanent plaque to be displayed at the high school. Heather Bruckner placed second and Barb Waters place third in the competition.

This competition is a 30 question, multiple-choice test, given to thousands of U.S. students around the world each year. Students have 90 minutes to complete it.

Only the best math students in Malta are chosen to participate each year. This test is the first level of a series of tests that results in scholarship awards and the selection of the U.S. Math Olympiad Team. Lodmell missed moving to the next level by just five points.

Crews busy repairing damaged bridge

The Phillips County area has had quite a lot of attention from the Montana Department of Transportation lately, with projects going on all over the county.

According to Mick Johnson, regional director, a Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) representative, and two DOT representatives met at the Cottonwood Creek Bridge on Hwy 191 north (formerly Hwy 242) Tuesday to determine whether the project is eligible for federal money and for how much.

Ice jams broke off a couple of piers on the upstream part of the bridge during the spring break-up, and as a result, the bridge has been closed except for one-lane traffic on the downstream side. Because of the increased stress, it has been closed to truck traffic.

Johnson said the fact that Governor Racicot has declared Montana a disaster area because of flooding, and county commissioners have also passed an emergency declaration, should make it eligible.

Malta Students Rate High At State Band Contest

Two Malta band students, Joan Arnold and Bill Veseth took their respective instruments, a clarinet, and a baritone sax, to the All-State solo and ensemble contest at Missoula last Saturday, and came out with a Division II rating, a very creditable rating, according to A.K. Ventur, Malta High School music director.

It was the first time that any music student from Malta ever participated in a state solo and ensemble contest. Some 400 students from all parts of Montana competed against one another – all in the same class, regardless of experience. The Malta band students competed in the reed instrument group and 29 entries were registered in this group. Out of this total, only two soloists merited a Division I rating. Ratings at the contest were from a Division I to a Division IV. Both Malta students received valuable criticisms from the judge, Mr. Gray, the University band director.

On Friday night, the 400 students and their parents were privileged to hear the Missoula band, orchestra, and A Cappella Choir, and on Saturday night they heard the fine University band, orchestra, and A Cappella choir. The contest was excellently managed and ran on schedule.

Band Concert Planned For April 25
