Throwers lead Malta at Whitewater Meet

The Malta Mustangs track team saw action in Whitewater last Thursday, April 21.

The team took second place amongst the nine teams present. The meet was won by the Havre Blue Ponies, a Class A team that competed in Whitewater for the first time. Havre had 168 points. Malta had 151 points. Lustre Christian was third with 54 points, Saco was fourth with 34 points, Frazer was fifth with 26, Turner was sixth with 24 points, Nashua was seventh with eight points, Hays Lodge Pole was eighth with three points, and Dodson was ninth with one point.

The Mustangs were led by Cash Salsbery who won shot put and discus. He had a season's best of 124-4 in discus and had a throw of 46-6 in shot put.

Tuss won high jump by clearing 5-8. He was second in long jump with a leap of 18-9 and second in javelin with a throw of 129-8.

Darrington was the anchor leg in the short relay team that won with a time of 49.73. The short relay consisted of Darrington, Salsbery, Gavin Slade, and Tuss.

Slade, a sophomore, was third in the 100 with a time of 11.98, third in javelin with a throw of 124-1, fourth in discus with a personal best of 97-9, and fourth in shot put with a best of 38-3.5.

"It's a small town, very cold and windy but it's great to be back," Pitman said. "It's been about three weeks."

He dropped a few inches off of his throw in a pit that was hampered by a cold and windy crosswind.

Pitman also took seventh in javelin with a throw of 109-3. He hopes to prequalify in shot put, discus, and javelin. He hopes to surpass his mark of 150-0, which he set at last year's Havre Invitational.

He was asked what it would take to meet his goals.

"The team," Pitman said. "I need more teammates to push me. I'm also going to be in the gym more."
