Local Miss Competes for Scholarships

Johanna Nagy would compete as Phillips County’s Distinguished Woman of Montana. She is one of five competing, being evaluated on scholastics, interview, self-expression, fitness, and talent.

Leaf Miners Become a Threat

“Leaf miners” were affecting leaves on local cottonwood trees, according to Marko Manoukian, County Agent. The insects lay their eggs within the leaves of various plants.

Sheep Wagons Restored

Jay Contway, well-known artist and sculptor, would be at the dedication of a restored sheep wagon. Contway donated the wagon to the Phillips County Museum. Contway recalled his dad tending sheep at the Walter Phillips ranch, which ran 67,500 head of sheep.

Aug. 6, 1997

The Loring Bar team earned second place in the Wild Cow Milking Contest at the Fair. The team consisted of mugger, Jason Morrison (who got trampled as usual and will have a black eye to show for his efforts); Shawn Simonson, milker, and Jerey McEwen. They were excited to get milk this year!

4-H Youth Awards, Rodeo & Princess

Some of the youth winning awards in 4-H at the fair included trophy winners: Shade Stiles, Derek Christman, Luke Spencer, Heidi Skinner, Drew Brewer, and Michael French. Other winners were: Ceri Demarais, Joe Jacobs and Justine Knudsen.

Reese Pederson won the Junior Bullfighter title at the county fair rodeo Sunday afternoon.

Chantell Lett was crowned 1997 Junior Rodeo Princess at the County Fair. She was presented her crown and belt buckle by last year’s Junior Princess Katie Ereaux. First runner-up was Jessica Henderson and second runner- up was Katie Smith.

August 10, 1972

Dunbar Takes Championship

Dixie Dunbar had the grand champion fat steer at the Phillips County Fair. The beef weighed in at 1250 pounds and was sold for $70.25 per hundred pound, for a total of over $878. Dixie has been in 4-H for 10 years and this is her last year. She also won the senior showmanship award.

Local Ambulance Kept Busy

Russ Cebulski, Phillips County Ambulance Coordinator, reported 244 calls this year. This included 106 accidents, resulting in 34 runs to Great Falls or Billings, and 34 to the nursing home. There were four suicide calls, eight rodeo calls, and 53 miscellaneous calls which includes house calls, heart attacks, and street calls. There was one “prank” call.

Hasler & Perry Ramrods For Wagon Train

Wagon Train Ramrods Bud Hasler and Lou Perry expect a big crowd for the meeting tomorrow night. George Hoynes, Big Flat Electric Co-op manager, will serve a mulligan at the first night’s gathering.

Friday night at the camp, Fred Itcaina will be serving lamb to the travelers. Chairman Lou Perry states that Sonny Oxarart and his crew of assistants, identified by red bandanas, will be on hand to help out along the way. Swede Sundin and Jake Wiederrick will shoe horses that are in need. Each wagon driver will provide his own necessities and entertainment.

Dodson Fair Entries & Booths

Mrs. Jim Farstad entered beautiful salmon gladiola in the fair with 17 flowers of the stems.

The Kiwanis Club cotton candy and Pronto Pup booth was a busy spot during the fair.

Family Celebrates Matriarch

Members of Mrs. Celina Demarais’ family celebrated her 91st birthday. She has nine children, 29 grandchildren, and 43 great-grandchildren.

Courts

The Justice Court and Traffic Court saw offenders charged with various ticketed charges including open liquor container, minor in possession, disturbing the peace, trespassing, and speeding. Eight of the eleven with charges were from Malta.

Lumsdens Visit Kirkaldie Pool

Mr. and Mrs. Warren Lumsden, and Pete, and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lumsden and family went to the mountains to visit Pat Lumsden, who is working at the Kirkaldie swimming pool.

Salveson Heads to Barber School

Sig Salveson and daughter Nancy took Jerry Salveson to Spokane, WA., to begin barber school. Gloria Flansaas rode with them.

Contested Divorces to Be Determined

Two contested divorce cases were taken under advisement last week by Judge C.B. Elwell of Havre, who held court here in the absence of Judge John Hurly. Both cases involved minor children.

Locals Complete Red Cross Training

Roy Howell is attending the Red Cross aquatic school at Meadow Lake, WY, from July 30 to August 9. He will be receiving instruction in lifesaving, first aid, and related subjects. Attending a Junior Red Cross training school at Rawlins on Flathead Lake are Tom Schurr Jr. and Donna Korb.

Fanfare Ready For Local Fair

Colorful horses and costumes would be featured at the thirty-second annual fair. About 30 riders are expected to take part in the parade. 4-H exhibits will be somewhat enlarged this year as reported by County Agent H. M. Oefstos. There will be nine pens of 4-H lambs on display and around 20 heads of beeves fitted by 4-H boys. Girls clubs are showing handicraft, sewing, and cookery exhibits.

Wallin & Ivanish Exchange Vows

Blanche Wallin and Lou Ivanish were wed in Great Falls at the Elizabeth Brown parlor of the First Methodist Church. Miss Elsie Wallin, sister of the bride, sang, “Because”.

New Cigarette Tax Boosts State Budget

Montana’s newest cigarette tax put more than $200,000 into the State general fund during its first month of operation, the State Board of Equalization has reported. The tax is two cents a pack.

Longest Running Fair to Open

The Phillips County Fair is coming this weekend. The local event, with the longest unbroken performance record anywhere in this part of the country, has always enjoyed excellent patronage and there is no reason to believe this year will be an exception.

Whitewater Well Producing

Gas was struck at a depth of 500 feet in a well being drilled by the Phillips Oil and Gas Company near Whitewater. Crops Reported Good

J.O. Barnard was in from the Missouri River country with reports that crops were so good that storage space was inadequate.

Grace Chapel Hosts Speaker

Rev. Rucker was to speak on the subject “Who to Vote For” at Grace Chapel.

New Addition to Drabbels Family

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Drabbels.

Election Looming Closer

The election was looming closer with the deadline for nominating petitions only a week away. There was some talk of a last-minute appearance of a full Democratic ticket. Dodson was featuring a big candidate’s ball.

Young Man Dies Following Shooting

William Malard, 18 years old, died in Malta after accidentally being shot in the leg. He was working on a cattle roundup on Alkali Creek.

Local Man Candidate for State Representative

Wallace Coburn was being spoken of by the people of Choteau County as a likely candidate for state representative. The editor of the Enterprise comments: “Why should people elect a young man for the office when there are many older and more deserving men who would be glad to Moses in a republican year like this. He can never get to first base”.
