Student Count

Dodson Schools started the year with a 23% increase in students. Most of them were transfers from Lodgepole.

Students of the Month

Samantha Dolphay and Devyn Salsbery were named Students of the Month for Dodson Schools.

Mustangs on The Road

The Mustangs were on the road to take on Plentywood after a 63-0 win over Harlem.

Saco Champion Knows Her Rope

Justinn Marshall of Saco earned the girls’ all-around championship at Miles City College over the weekend.

Flags of Home

National Guardsman SFC John Wiese, of Malta, sent the PCN a picture from Afghanistan showing the US flag, Montana flag, and Afghanistan flag flying over the company’s command post.

Get Ready For the Bags

After the action at the Dickinson Tournament, the M-ette spikers will be traveling to Glasgow Saturday night for what Coach Julia Tafafu says could be “an intense loud game.” It is Glasgow’s homecoming and the bagpipes will be at the game!”

Sept. 24, 1997

In the Line of Duty

Deputy Brian Robinson, of Zortman, returned home after two days in the hospital, after being shot by a man later identified as Charles Carpenter, who died as a result of injuries in the incident. A woman who died in the altercation died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A second woman appeared in Justice Court and was returned to Colorado Springs, CO, on an outstanding warrant.

Helping Others

Buttrey Food Stores announce the implementation of the “Blue Barrel” program. Designed to assist the Malta Food Bank, people can donate food, or purchase donation slips for the Food Bank to make purchases.

Hoping to Change Pattern

After a 59-6 breather over Harlem, the Mustangs will face three-time Class A football champions Miles City on Friday. This is the fifth time the Mustangs have faced the Cowboys, and they have fallen short in all four previous matchups.

Celebrate 75th

Jamie Hancock, Administrator at the Good Samaritan Center joined other GSC across the nation in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Society. Malta’s Good Sam was built in 1979.

Cuter Than a Baby…Mallard?

Three-year-old JayAnn Demarais, was pictured (gently) petting a baby mallard held by her father, Darren, during a grade school field trip to Bowdoin Wildlife Refuge.

Kelly Cole, of Dodson High School, was named one of 35,000 students honored for their exceptional academic promise.

Kicked the Doggies to the Curb

Malta M-ettes claimed a 62-57 victory over the Glasgow Scotties on the Scotties’ home court. Coach Del Fried said, “That was a big game for us at Glasgow. This put us in the lead in conference standings. Beating Glasgow, a main rival, is a big step-they had a huge crowd…the biggest crowd we’ve played in front of in Glasgow.”

It Runs, (Or Flies?) In The Family

Violet Veseth, making her first long solo flights in two jumps returned to Malta Monday after having flown her son, Ray, to Colorado for college. She secured her private license a month before. A decidedly air-minded family, she is the fourth member of the family to secure a private license: brother, Carl, local theatre owner; Dr. Myron Veseth, Malta; and her son, Ray.

Group Working On Nursing Nome

Five local churches each authorized two members of their congregation to serve as a board of directors and work to establish a retirement home. Serving will be: John Richardson and Sig Salveson (Assembly of God); Harry Orahood and Allen Hill (Christian Church); James Nordlund and Mrs. Alice Watts (Little White Church); Carl Fahlgren and George Hoynes (Malta Lutheran); and Dr. Dan Molloy and Roger Ereaux (St. Mary’s Catholic Church).

Late Night Activities Up to No Good

A thief, or thieves, entered Dodson School by prying open a back door. They wheeled a safe into a broom closet as so not to be detected. Cash in the amount of several hundreds of dollars was taken, and $300 in checks were left.

Celebrating Ruby

Family and friends are invited to the 40th Anniversary of Ralph and Ruth Patrick. The open house will be held at the Moose Hall.

Arnie Solheim, of Wolf Point, announced the forthcoming marriage of his daughter, Paula, and Mick Morrison, of Malta.

Miss Democrat to Be Selected

Phillips County contestants for “Miss Democrat” were honored at a reception. Contestants were LaRae Waters, Maureen Golik, and Marsha Anderson, who would compete with 37 other contestants for 17 scholarships, varying from $25 to $500.

Climbs Jap Mountain

Cpl. Walter D. Campbell was pictured when he received an inscribed climb pole at the summit shrine of Mount Fuji, after completing the ascent of Japan’s 12,395-foot sacred volcano which lies seventy miles southwest of Tokyo. A graduate of Malta High School, he is a draftsman with the 38th Statistical Control Unit, he is now based at Fucha, Honshu, Japan.

Holman Hereford Home’s 2nd Annual

Selling at auction on October 2nd will be 200 head of Registered Herefords, including Herd Sires, Range Bulls, Open Heifers, Bred Cows—Young and Broody. Also: 90 Yearling, 44 Good, Young Cows, 65 Open Heifers, and Working Herefords.

Coyotes Resume Football

The Coyotes resumed football after several years of lapse, as per Superintendent P. M. Scott. Lining up against the Saco Panthers will be James Nordlund, Vance Ramberg, Olan Munson, Leonard Boos, Dick McNamara, Allan Plouffe, Lon Rusk, Jack Riding, Garry Kodalen, Brian McBride, Donald Black, Clarence Adams, Glen Williams, John Dolphy and Elwy Bapp.

Cars Damaged

Cars operated by Clarence Kiern and Paul Peterson were damaged early Sunday morning in accidents about three miles west of Malta. The Peterson car struck the side of a bridge, went out of control, and struck the Kiern car as it was coming onto the bridge. No one was injured. Peterson was fined $50 for reckless driving.

New KC Officers Installed at Recent Meeting

A new roster of officers was elected and installed by the Malta Knights of Columbus, at a regular meeting. Richard Schwartz succeeded Pat Kirwan as Grand Knight, and officers include: Clarence Raskopf (Deputy Grand Knight); Paul Faubert (Chancellor); B. J. McMenomy (Lecturer); Roman Losleben (Financial Secretary); Joe LaPlante (Recording Secretary); H. E. Jacobson (Advocate); Charles Wagner (Warden); Carl Linstrand (Inside Guard); Aden Hoagland (Outside Guard); and Trustees Francis Schwartz, M. H. Drabbles and Howard McCandless.
