Mavericks Top Harlem, Lustre

The North Country Mavericks Volleyball Team is now 9-0 after picking up a pair of wins last week.

The Mavericks defeated the Harlem Lady Wildcats 3-0 on Thursday, September 22, in Harlem. North Country defeated the Lustre Lions 3-0 in Lustre on Saturday, September 24.

The Lady Mavericks will be on the road again for two more games this week. They will face Malta on Thursday, September 29. The games are set to start at 5 p.m. at the Malta High School Gymnasium.

The Mavs will then head to Froid to take on the Froid/Medicine Lake Redhawks on Saturday, October 1, at 5 p.m.

In the Maverick's win over Harlem, the scores were 25-22, 25-15, and 25-22.

"We came out in this match starting every set a little slow and getting ourselves in a position to dig back out," North Country Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "We looked awesome when things were on tempo and rolling, and when they weren't it wasn't pretty."

Teagan Erickson led the Mavericks with 10 kills and three aces. Kendall Scheffelmear had seven kills and two aces. Paige Wasson had six kills, seven assists, and two aces. Kennedy Simonson had seven assists.

"I told them after the match the one thing I was really proud of them for was holding their composure," Coach Wasson said. "I never saw a look of defeat on their faces or rattled at all. We are still finding our way as a team this season, nothing has really clicked fully for us."

The scores in the Mavericks win over Lustre Christian were 25-10, 25-10, and 25-21.

"This was a slower-paced match for us and we did a good job in the first two sets of staying on track and using our strengths to take the lead and keep it early," Coach Wasson said. "We really had a good night from the service line in this match."

Kora LaBrie led the team with 12 aces. P. Wasson had six kills and five assists. Mattea McColly had nine aces and five kills. Cienna Strommen had four aces. Simonson and Berkley Hillman each had three aces. Bailey McColly and Scheffelmear each had one block.

"Our seniors lead us in aces and scored a total of 25 points between the three of them," Coach Wasson said. "In the last set, we made some substitutions to let some JV players in the match, which caused a few miscommunications and tempo changes, but we held ourselves together and got the job done in three."
