Angels at Work

Angel Tree Program representative Terry Robinson was presented with a check for $821 for the Christmas program expenses. The funds were raised from a Halloween costume party and was presented by DoDee Oxarart.

Artists Are Prepared

Painters, Judy Michael and Todd Mandeville, and sculptor Carmen Luna were preparing for the Specialty Fair which was upcoming.

Mustang Talent

Kaden Bedwell caught three passes from Kendall Denham, for a total of 82 yards. One was a 55-yard touchdown.

Collector Visits

Evert Bruckner, MD was making his annual visit to the homestead. As an avid collector of cancelled postcards, he was in search of those from Phillips County that he still needed. At one time, there were 56 county post offices.

Ahead of the Game

Junior running back, Reid Robinson, ran for 257 yards on 19 carries to move ahead of Chance Demarais’ 253 yards. Jade Olson was number two in rushing yards; Rick Mans still held the number one spot with 370 yards.

Happy Face, Sad Face

The 20th Annual Health Care Fund-raise grossed $26,000. It was a combination happy-sad affair. Happy about the success, and sad as it was the final healthcare auction for the veteran auctioneer, Cliff Rustad.

Courtney Henry, senior, was pictured in a mid-air pose as she set the volleyball in action. Malta took third at District volleyball and advanced to Divisionals.

Every Family Needs One

Whitewater graduate, Maribeth Anderson, was sworn in and admitted to the North Dakota Bar. She is opening her own law office in Bismarck.

Fifty Years Celebrated

The family of Morris and Walda Hungerford extended an invitation to attend the celebration of their 50th anniversary.

The Anthony’s store in Malta was beginning a total liquidation sale.

Ranch Recognized

The Austin Ranch in Whitewater was being recognized as one of the ranches in Montana that has been in the family for 100 years. The ranch, owned by Harry and Sally Austin, is leased by Jean and Jeanie Green.

Director Elected

Ken Blunt, a local rancher, was elected by fellow stockholders to serve on the Farm Credit Services Local Board of Directors. Blunt is a rancher in the Regina community, in southern Phillips County.

Bowl ‘Em Over

First place in the Monday Nite Men’s League High Team Series was held this week by Green’s Diesel with 2526 points; they placed third in High Team ranking with 879. Dennis Hould had High Individual Series with 633 points. Women’s High Individual winner was Jean Niebur.

Long Time Member

Emery Whitaker was presented with his 50 yr. membership pin of the Grand Lodge. Presenting the pin were Lodge members Jim Curtis and Ross Simser.

She’s Got Numbers

Darlene Pugh, science and math teacher at Malta High School, was re-elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the Montana Science Teachers Association. She represents counties in northeastern Montana to the North Dakota Border.

Leann Pippin is teaching this year in Japan. She is a former student and teacher at Saco Public School.

“Old football heroes don’t fade away, they just turn into sideline stalkers and armchair quarterbacks.” Sports trivia buffs could compare Kirk Stiles to his grandfather, Dwayne Simanton, in 1947, snapping the ball off to Deb Long. Others that were on the team of ’47 were: George Knudsen, Jim Spartz, Ole Veseth, Vern Matthews, Bill Losleben, Tom Schurr, Pete Lapham, Alan Wilson, Ward Genger, and Tom Simanton. Returning lettermen were Donald Knudsen, Cliff Barrett, Harvey Kaul, Allen Rose, Louis Ruiz, and Delmar LaBrie.

It Was a Laughing Matter!

Leonard Bergstrom’s speech, “Holding the Bag” was voted the best at the Malta Toastmasters humorous speech contest; Carl Fahlgren served as toastmaster for the evening.

The Selective Service office reports that the following left last Thursday for Butte to take Army physicals: Mervin Bishop, Lance Ivanish, Milton Oxarart, Terry McMullen, Sidney Hould, Bryce Campbell, Ronald Sjostrom, and Robin Brenden. Leaving on Monday will be James Losleben.

Coaching Recognized

Bill Ryan, basketball coach at Malta High School, received an achievement award from the National Basketball Coaches of the United States. The award was in recognition of the Class B championship team of 1971-72.

Making Plans

Mrs. Vic Nicholson, the spokesman for the Angus Auxiliary, announced the fall meeting would be held on Nov. 3 at 4 P.M. at Roger’s Supper Club.

Key Club members will provide free rides to the election polls on Tuesday.

Benito Ruiz (alias Robert Layton) was sentenced to years in the state penitentiary for taking a vehicle without consent. He had taken a car that belonged to Fred Thackeray in Dodson, which was picked up in Chinook.

Fund Drive

Mayor E. L. Seel proclaimed November as Mentally Retarded Month in Malta. Mrs. Collin Campbell, president of the Phillips County Association for the Retarded Children and Adults, along with Mrs. Larry Cornell, vice president, were heading a fund drive.

ROTC Enlistee

John L. Kamla, a local graduate in 1972, has enrolled in the Army ROTC at MSU; he is studying physical therapy.

Oct. 30, 1947

With Honors

The body of Pfc. Edward G. Kuntz was the first casualty of WWll from Phillips County, to be brought back to Malta for burial; he had died in a Japanese prison camp on Dec. 27, 1941. Cliff Lundstrom, commander of the military ceremony, was assisted by the firing squad: George Hoynes, Edmund Tank, Donald Groske, Bernard Majsusiak, Homer Blevins, Arthur Schlieve, Jr., Jack Legg, Willard Brandon, Frances Schwartz, and E. L. Humphreys.

Tried It…Got Caught

S. A. Simonson of Whitewater, Harold Wang of Forks, and Lester Knapp of Beavercreek, all received fines in justice court for violation of state livestock laws providing that all cattle and horses moved from one county to another be inspected.

New Game…“Mud Ball”

The Malta Mustangs trimmed the Fort Benton Longhorns, with a score of 18 to 0. The game was played on a muddy field as it had rained most all day. By the end of the game, the football could not be referred to as a pig skin. It was a heavy ball of mud.

Mr. and Mrs. Duane Compton were giving a wedding dance at the Loring Hall. There will be FREE BEER and music will be provided by a 7-Piece Out-of-State Orchestra.

Fatality a Former Resident

Richard (Chick) Thomas, 17, formerly of Malta, died in Great Falls, the second victim of a motorcycle-automobile accident. He was riding on a bike driven by Navy Coxwain Kenneth P. Nelson, the first fatality of the accident. Charles A. Heagy was booked for DUI and transferred to jail.

Party for Spooks

A HALLOWE’EN DANCE was being held at the Dodson School gym. Sponsored by the Legion Post 65 and Auxiliary, new and old-time music would be played; a “good lunch” would be provided.

Murder-Suicide

Rev. L. J. Christler, (in Havre) former pastor of St. Mary’s church in Malta, was shot and killed. A coroner’s inquest decided that a friend, Mrs. Margaret Carleton, had shot the minister and then committed suicide.

Talk About Ungrateful

The young people had about wrecked the town on Hallowe’en. Editor Johnson was indignant that the culprits were school boys and Malta had received little thanks for the recent purchase of football togs.

Little to Write About

With the general election but a few days off the Malta Enterprise appeared in a special edition devoted entirely to politics. The only new story was an account of a “rally” held by the Democrats which was described as a “back door” affair.
