A semi-truck had to be pulled back onto Hwy 2 following a collision with another semi-truck. One truck was carrying military ordinance (bombs).

The Loyola Rams had traveled to Malta to meet up with the Mustangs; they claimed their first-ever Class B state championship title, winning 20-14 over the Mustangs.

Kevin R. Hanson has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard; a 2005 graduate of Malta, he is the son of David and Margaret Hanson.

Members of the Phillips County Livestock Association who attended the annual meeting on Friday voted to establish a predator control district. The purpose is to help alleviate the overabundance of coyotes killing livestock.

The Stockman Bar and Grill is holding its 4th Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner on Thanksgiving Day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., or until the food runs out. Single people with no place to go, others who just don’t feel like cooking, and hunters stranded here are welcome to attend.

Long-time educators, George Knudsen and Mary Kron were retiring from the library board. Mrs. Kron has served 17 years and Mr. Knudsen retired after more than 22 years of serving. They were honored at an open house at the county library.

Malta residents answered Good Sam’s call for help when the heating system went down and left the staff and 60 residents of the nursing home without heat. Within an hour of the plea going out on KMMR at 6:45 a.m., there were more than enough heaters on loan from the community to heat the facility. The heaters were used in the dining and activity areas only, and the boiler was quickly fixed temporarily until parts arrived the following day and were installed.

Malta Mayor Byron Ereaux signed a proclamation declaring Nov. 16-22 as American Education Week. Providing the petition were Malta Education Association Executive Board members Steve Schumacher, Lynette Ereaux, Cindy Christman, and Evie Perry.

Local invitations included the open house for Roy and Marilyn Taylor’s 25th wedding anniversary and the 25th wedding anniversary of Terry and Donna Korman. An invitation for the 80th birthday celebration of Swede Hammond was also being held.

Dodson first-year Coach Katy Hould and her players are very excited as the Coyotes gear up to make their first appearance at Divisionals since 1991.

Four Lady Coyotes from Dodson were honored by the Frazer Lady Bearcubs with star quilts. Receiving quilts were Sarah Marney, Kelly Cole, Stacie Kline, and Tracie Overberg.

Jack Stenswick, accompanied by a driver, a guide, and a butcher, was a successful elk hunter in the Larb Hills.

Malta senior football players saw their high school careers close out with a 21-20 loss in the semi-finals on Mustang territory last weekend.

Malta suffered one of its worst losses in years with a 62-38 loss to Glasgow Saturday in the District 2B basketball finals in Wolf Point. Humbled by the arch-rival, the M-ettes are still alive as 2B advances four teams to divisional play this weekend.

Marty and Sandy Johnson recently joined the Malta community. Marty is a CPA with CHMS, P.C., and Sandy is opening Little Critters Daycare. They have two children, Matthew and Meghan.

Women honored at the “Old Timer’s Celebration” were Beth Lefdahl, Anna Shores, Ruth Abbey, Margaret Messerly, Mae Walsh, Betty Kaufman, Adele Cummings, Bernice Garjo, and Doris Potter. Men honored were Jim Watkins, Tweet Oxarart, Jack Smith, Clyde Morris, Lloyd Lefdahl, Vern Trail, Disk Schwartz, Martin Matovitch, and Joe Eskildsen.

Saco Panthers, seeded second in 3C in girl’s basketball, had to endure a first-round scare to end up as the runner-up of the District Divisional Tournament. Whitewater defeated Saco to take first in the tournament.

Dr. Anne Johnson placed first in the Make It With Wool contest, and Lorna Lang was first runner-up. Ceri Demarais received an award for the best use of wool for her lifestyle in the pre-teen division.

Nov. 23, 1972

Dean Robertson, Malta High School principal, was elected president of the Malta Area Chamber of Commerce. Clarence Mikkelson was elected vice-president, and R. H. Ulrich, treasurer. Gene Seel is secretary of the group.

Colleen Rogers was hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries following an accident at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning. She was the passenger in a car driven by John Rothie that went out of control on a curve on the Harb road and rolled on its top.

Malta Mustang wrestlers took Class B-C honors at the Havre Take Down tournament last Saturday. Steve Baeth and Greg Oxarart won individual championships for the Mustangs, Baeth in the 132-pound class, and Oxarart in the 138-pound class. Also placing were Nick Cebulski, second in the 126-pound class; Troy Blunt, second in the 167-pound class; Pete Lumsden – third in 185-pound; Al VanHoudt, third in heavyweight class; Dennis Siegle fourth in 98; Ron Tuma fourth is 195; Leo Barthelmess fourth in 119 and Dwain Hould fourth in 145.

Nov. 20, 1947

Die-hard Mustang fans showed up in record numbers to attend the hard-fought football thriller and shiver through the cold as the Mustangs defeated the Choteau Bulldogs. The final score was 20-14.

The Buster Deo VFW Post 4067 set its membership goal at 350 with a deadline of January 1 for dues.

Local talented musicians performed at the Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday evening. Duets were performed by Doris and Gail Cotter, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. William Cotter. Next were two solos by Russel and Elaine Hendrickson, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hendrickson.

The South Wagner folks shipped cattle from Wagner Thursday. Joe Holzhey and T. J. Brummer accompanied the shipment to an eastern market.

Bunk Grimsley is getting things ready for some cement work to be done in the middle of the week by Sam Meyers. Sherman Grimsley is having a basement dug in Malta and plans to pour on Thursday. He plans on moving a house onto the foundation and fixing it up so the children and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Seel can live there during the school year.

Edwin Johnston called at Bunk Grimsley’s Sunday hunting a barrel to scald hogs in.

Two four-horse outfits and two loads of grain were seized at the international line north of Malta. Owners of the grain failed to pay 10 cents per bushel duty. Many Canadian farmers were hauling wheat to Malta elevators.

Mrs. Clarence Rawdon succumbed to illness at the Columbus Hospital in Great Falls.

Twelve thousand bushels of grain were piled on the ground at The Farmers Elevator.

Louis Solberg, Louis Nybo, Sid Funk, and Fred L. Robinson were stockholders in the newly incorporated Malta Standard Garage.

The lid was on gambling at Saco. Several arrests had been made and law enforcement officers were concentrating their efforts in that area.

Ray L. Campbell resigned as Phillips County Treasurer. He planned to take over the duties of undersheriff under Sheriff-elect Charles Wolfe, the first of the year.

Miss Mabel Peck had completed a term of school and planned to remain in Malta for the winter.

Dan McKay had the bad luck to have a kiln of brick spoiled by freezing. He had been getting brick at Malta for the Glasgow schoolhouse.

Wallace Dye, found guilty of the murder of one John Mottner, was sentenced to 10 years in the state prison.

The young people of the community had organized a “flinch” club and were holding regular meetings where cards and games were enjoyed.
