One Nation, Under God

I Have to Brag About my Boys

I learned something from both of my sons over the last couple of weeks.

The first lesson came from my four-year-old son Lincoln.

Lincoln is a very observant boy. He catches things that I often overlook.

One week, Lincoln was unable to attend preschool because he was sick. Susan, my wife, stayed home with our youngest son from Monday to Wednesday. Then came my turn to take care of Linc.

I was stressed out about work and it made it hard for me to enjoy my time with him due to me worrying about work and reaching the newspaper deadline.

Friday morning, I asked Lincoln what day of the week it was.

“I don’t know,” Linc responded.

I then told him it was Friday.

“I should have known it was Friday,” Lincoln said. “It’s my favorite day of the week.”

Curious as to why it was his favorite day, I asked him about it and I was not at all prepared for the next words that would come out of his mouth.

“Because I get to spend the whole day with you,” he said.

I was driving him around at the time, and I nearly pulled over because my eyes were teary.

I don’t know my response to him, but I remember thinking to myself that I need to stop stressing about work because that day was about my time with him.

Those words put a few things in perspective and elated my heart.

Now for the lesson that I learned from my oldest son. He has more confidence than I thought.

When I was younger I enjoyed performing in front of a crowd to an extent. I have played at numerous venues as a drummer. I even gave sermons at various churches. PJ did something that I had never even dreamed of doing; performing a major role in a school Christmas play.

When he told us that he was asked to play Santa Claus in the Malta Elementary play, I wasn’t sure how he was going to do.

When it came down to it, and the final song started, he was amazing! I was so proud, because it takes a lot of confidence to do what he did! I probably would’ve passed out on that stage.

I am happy to report that there is no need for a fitness related New Year’s Resolution from me. I have been working out for months now. I am still very much out of shape, but I have been trying and getting stronger, slowly but surely. I am also getting older as well, and feeling these workouts every time.
