Coyotes Defeat North Country, Fall to Scobey, Lustre

The Dodson Coyotes and North Country Maverick basketball teams provided Dodson's Coyote Den with plenty of action on Friday, January, 20, as the Coyotes defeated the Mavs 60-41.

The Coyotes were led by senior Mikey Jaynes who scored 32 points.

Junior Stiffarm had 14 points, Sebastian Best had eight points, Chaske Cliff had three points, and Mason LoneBear had three points.

"We came into the game with a good mindset, the best mind that we possibly could and we just got it done," Stiffarm told the PCN.

The Coyotes played their first game under Head Coach Clayton KillEagle, who is taking over coaching duties for the near future.

The Mavericks were led by Blaine Downing, who scored 21 points, 16 of which came in the fourth quarter. Kade Strommen had eight points, Coy Bowman had six points. Kenan LaBrie, Laytin Erickson, and Andrew Boucher each had two points.

Dodson held the Mavericks to five points in the first quarter, while scoring 11 points of their own, despite having their own issues scoring on offense. Both teams struggled to score offensively at first, but the Coyotes turned things around in the second quarter, scoring 20 points and only giving up eight.

"We got a good lead which gave us confidence and gave us something to play off of," Jaynes said. "We know what type of basketball that we are playing, and I don't think that there is a team out there that we can't beat, so if we just play basketball, I think that we will be alright."

The Mavericks won 57-50 the last time that these teams played, and now the series is tied 1-1.

"We wanted our revenge on this team," Stiffarm said. "We knew that we could beat them (last time) and that's why it hurt so bad. We used that today."

The Coyotes put forth a strong effort against the Scobey Spartans last Saturday, January 21, in Dodson, and led 13-9 at halftime. Ultimately the Coyotes fell 40-32.

The Coyotes were led by Jaynes who had 22 points. Stiffarm had six points and Mason LoneBear had four points.

The Mavericks went on to lose a close one to the Circle Wildcats in Hinsdale. The final score was 70–60.
