Mustangs Second in 2B Conference

The Malta Mustangs have finished the regular season with a five-game win streak as they head to the 2023 2B District Tournament to be held in Malta this weekend.

The Mustangs had an overall record of 13-5, and a conference record of 4-2, which was good enough for second place. Wolf Point will enter as the conference champions with a 16-2 record overall. The Wolves were 6-0 against 2B opponents.

On Thursday, February 16, Malta will face the Poplar Indians, who enter the 2B tournament as the third seed. The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. at the MHS Gymnasium.

Wolf Point will take on the winner of game 1, a match between fourth seed Glasgow (8-10) and Harlem (2-15), the fifth seed.

If Malta can defeat Poplar for a third time this year, they will likely face Wolf Point, who has defeated Malta twice this season. Wolf Point beat Malta 58-57 in a mid-December game and 66-51 in late January.

Last week, the Mustangs defeated the Poplar Indians 62-35 in Poplar on Friday, February 10, and then Shelby 73-57 on Saturday, February 11, in Malta.

The Mustangs were led in scoring by sophomore Treyton Wilke who had 20 points and two assists.

Senior Jared Eggebrecht had 18 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Eggebrecht was 2-for-3 from the three-point range. Sophomore Bodhi Brenden had 14 points, six assists, and two steals. Brenden was 4-for-5 from the three-point range. Stockton Oxarart had 12 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

After trailing 5-3 in the opening minutes, Malta had an 11-point run and maintained their lead throughout the rest of the game. Malta outscored Shelby 19-13 in the first quarter and 17-9 in the second. Shelby had 18 to Malta's 15 in the third quarter, but Malta finished strong holding Shelby to 17 points while adding 22 to their total.

Oxarart led Malta in their win over Poplar with 21 points and three rebounds. Wilke had 13 points, five points, and two steals. Eggebrecht had 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

**Tournament tickets for the 2023 District 2B Basketball Tournament will be sold at Malta High School on the night of each event.

Thursday - February 16. $7.00 for an adult and $5.00 for a student. Friday - February 17. $10.00 for an adult and $7.00 for a student. Saturday - February 18. $10.00 for an adult and $7.00 for a student. Ticket prices are set by the District 2B Administrators.

Malta High School Activity Passes as well as Golden Age Passes are not valid at post-season events.
