Tragic & costly winter

The extremely cold weather was continuing with a 60 below zero reading, the lowest in years. Ranchers from various parts of the county reported stock losses as the heaviest in years. A. Davidson had found several heads of his range cattle frozen to death. The Powell’s had lost about 1,500 sheep and the Morton sheep outfit had several bands in extremely bad shape near Whitewater. While attempting to trail sheep with a load of hay on a sled, William Dunbar drove over a 15-foot cut bank. He saved his sheep from piling up. J. H. Austin and J. A. Ebaugh had better news as they had reported no losses to date. George Smith said the cold snap had exhausted his feed supply.
