Malta Golf Teams Compete; Gibbs Wins in Malta for Girls, Bishop Takes First in Glasgow for Boys

The Malta Golf Team was busy last week, participating in four meets as the offseason fast approaches. These meets included the Glasgow Invitational and the Malta Athletic Club Invitational which happened on Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29 respectively.

At the MAC meet, the M-ette golfers took first place as a team with a score that was 126 over par. Glasgow was second with 219 strokes over par.

The PCN caught up with junior Sydney Gibbs, who was the individual champion and team leader for Malta with 95 strokes, 23 over par.

"It went very good," Gibbs said of her day. "It was my personal best."

She was asked about the key to her success.

"I was very consistent with my shots and my putting was good," Gibbs said. "My drives were very good."

She was asked how it felt to golf at home.

"I enjoyed it!" Gibbs said.

Gibbs and teammate Brittney Sorlie, a sophomore, both tied for second in Glasgow.

In the Malta meet, senior Kennedy Koss was third at the meet with 104 strokes, 32 over par. Her final home meet was the best total that she has had in the season.

"I did lose a lot of strokes from yesterday," Koss said. "I just swung easy and had fun."

She was asked how it felt to host her final home meet.

"It was a beautiful day today, and it was pretty nice with not very much wind," Koss said. "Which is not what we usually have."

She said that hole four was her favorite, and that day she parred it.

"I hadn't yet this year, so it felt pretty good," Koss said.

Kylie Bishop was fourth with 107 strokes, followed by Brittney Sorlie who had 108 strokes.

Sorlie was asked about her week, which included the aforementioned second place tie in Glasgow.

"My long drives have saved me a lot," Sorlie said. "As well as (getting past) the pressure and just letting loose, and staying down."

Sorlie had improved two strokes since her last Malta meet, which was last year's Divisional meet. She was asked about the weather at Saturday's meet.

"It was very nice," she said. "There wasn't too much wind. It was a little bit cloudy but at the end the sun came out and it was very nice."

She felt that golfing at home brought a home course advantage.

Kyann Bergos also placed in the top ten, placing eighth with 119 strokes.

Glasgow's Laynee Simpson, who golfed for Saco last year, was ninth with 119 strokes.

At the Malta meet, the Mustangs placed second as a team going, 94 over par, While the Glasgow Scotties, who took first place were 48 over par.

Malta's Kaden Bishop led the team by taking third place with 83 strokes, or 11 over par.

Bishop had also led Malta in Glasgow, with a first place finish, the first individual title that he has won in Glasgow. He was asked what went so well in Glasgow.

"My short game," Bishop said. "I was making a lot of putts, a lot of long power saves and some birdie putts. I missed an eagle putt on hole two."

In contrast, Bishop felt that his outing in Malta didn't go as well

"I kind of struggled today," he said. "I was six over in the first 16 holes, and went five over in the last two. I doubled my score. I just need to finish better."

Being a senior, the MAC meet was his last home meet. He was asked how it felt to be playing at home.

"It makes it a lot more fun," Bishop said. "It's really homey here. It's better to play at home than anywhere else because you know the course."

Bishop has been golfing in Malta for most of his life and was asked if he had a favorite memory on the course.

It occurred last year golfing with his family.

"Probably my eagle on hole 6," Kaden said. "I took a driver to the corner on the back nine, then a seven iron over the trees, stuck it within ten feet and made an eagle putt."

Kellen Murray was ninth for Malta with 94 strokes, 22 over par. Trooper Stiles. Trooper Stiles was eleventh with 100 strokes, and Camryn Mears was nineteenth with 109 strokes.

Hunter Stolem was twentieth overall with 106 strokes.

In Glasgow, the Mustangs took second, going 78 over par. Glasgow won by going 60 over par.

Bishop was first with 79 strokes, Stolem was seventh wih 93 strokes, Murray was tied for tenth with 93 strokes, and Stiles was tied for thirteenth with 98 strokes.

In the girls' meet in Glasgow, Malta was second with a total of 448 strokes, only one behind Plentywood who won the meet with 447.

Gibbs and Sorlie both tied for second at the meet with 107 strokes. Koss was fifth with 114 strokes, and Ky. Bishop was eighth with 120 strokes. Bergos was not too far behind taking ninth with 121 strokes.
