The Dodson, Saco, and Whitewater Track Teams competed in Glasgow on Saturday, May 13, at the 3C District Meet.
At the meet, two Phillips County athletes; Saco’s Josie Brown and Whitewater’s Paige Wasson set 3C District Meet records.
Wasson had a record throw of 125-5 in javelin, and Brown ran a record time of 12.67 seconds in the 100 meter dash.
The Whitewater Lady Penguins were the highest placing team amongst Phillips County Class C schools, taking third in the womens’ meet with 82 points. Scobey won the meet with 190 points, Hinsdale was second with 107, Nashua was fourth with 54, Saco was fifth with 51, Frazer was sixth with 23, Dodson was seventh with six, and Lustre Christian was eighth with four points.
Frazer won the mens’ meet with 234 points. Scobey was second with 141, Nashua was third with 54, Saco was fourth with 28, Dodson was fifth with 24 points, Hinsdale was sixth with 18, Whitewater was seventh with 11, and Frazer was eighth with seven.
Mens' Meet
Saco sophomore Blaine Downing qualified in five individual events. He won pole vault by clearing 13-3. He attempted to break Kirk Capdeville’s 3C Meet record of 14-8, but fell short.
He was fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.15, fourth in the 200 with a personal best of 24.59, fourth in the 400 with a new best of 1:00.14, fourth in javelin with a throw of 114-2, and seventh in triple jump with a mark at 37-1.
Panther teammate Marshall Caves, a junior, was third in pole vault by clearing 11-6. He was also eighth in the 100 with a time of 12.87.
Dodson’s Lance Snow was second in the 3200, thanks in part to a final kick in the last lap. He had a new personal best of 13:15.99.
“It was nice,” Snow said of his run. “When I hit the 100 meter, I just let the wind take me and I would glide. When I hit the 300 meter corner, I would push through the wind. I went as fast as I could against the wind so that I didn’t slow down and hit a wall.”
He was also fifth in the 1600 and seventh in the 800 with times of 6:08.41, and 2:41 (personal best) respectively.
“It’s a very good feeling to cross that finish line and you get to relax until the next race,” Snow said.
Coyote teammate Sebestian Best qualified in four individual events. Best was fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:35. He was also seventh in the 1600 with a personal record of 6:15.62. He was also eighth in long jump and triple jump with marks at 17-7.5 and 36-5.75 respectively.
Dodson’s Short Relay team consisting of Mason LoneBear, Tyson Crawford, Forrest Bessman, and Best were third with a time of 54.56, their best of the season.
The long relay consisting of Crawford, Sonny Cole, Snow, and Bessman was also third with a time of 4:39.24.
Whitewater’s Austin Hanley was fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 21.70 and fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.13.
Penguin teammate Korbyn Skubinna was fifth in pole vault with a personal best of 8-6. He was also eighth in the 400 with a personal best of 1:03.56.
Tyler Scheffelmear was sixth in javelin with a personal best of 111-4.
Womens' Meet
The Saco Lady Panthers were led by Josie Brown who won the 100 meter dash with a 3C Meet and Saco School record of 12.67 seconds.
The PCN caught up with Brown after she found out about the achievement.
“I am excited because I beat our school record, which has been up for a good 20 years,” Brown said. “It feels fantastic because I have been waiting to get that for so long.”
She said that when she was in middle school, she kept looking at the record board.
“Going here today, I said that I am going to get the record today!” Brown said. “And then I did, it feels good to have all of that hard work pay off.”
She said that the key was getting into a good mental space.
“Having a good mindset means that you are going to have a good race,” Brown said.
Brown also won the 200 with a personal best of 26.22. She was also second in pole vault after clearing a season’s best of 7-6 and second in the 400 with a time of 1:01.86.
The Lady Penguins were led by Shelbi LaBrie, who won the 3200 with a time of 12:12.29. She took second in the 800 with a personal best of 2:27.87. She did not run the 1600, but pre-qualified earlier this season.
Lady Penguin Paige Wasson was first in javelin with a throw of 125-5. The mark is a new 3C Meet Record. Wasson also placed third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.18.
Kendall Scheffelmear was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.54, second in triple jump with a season’s best of 32-5.5. third in the 300 hurdles with a season’s best of 52.20
Whitewater’s long relay team consisting of Kennedy Simonson, Scheffelmear, LaBrie, and Wasson took second place with a time of 4:28.37.
Simonson was third in triple jump with a personal best of 31-6.5, sixth in javelin with a personal best of 88-7, seventh in the 800 with a new best of 2:50.75.
Whitewater’s Kora Labrie was fourth in javelin with a throw of 94-8. She was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:50.58.
Ava Hanley was fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.93, she was sixth in the 300 hurdles with a season’s best of 58.09, and sixth in the 100 with a time of 14.67.
Lady Panther Abby Yeska was third in high jump after clearing 3-8. She took sixth place in shot put with a throw of 27-10 and seventh in discus with a throw of 75-10.
The youngest Lady Panther, freshman Ireland Mears, was fourth in the 100 with a personal best of 14.38, fifth in the 200 with a new best of 29.98, fifth in the 300 hurdles with a new best of 57.74, and sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:08.99.
Lady Coyote Kylee Ball was fourth in discus with a throw of 88-0 and fifth in shot put with a throw of 29-10.5.
