The Penguins set out for Havre on Saturday for the Havre Invitational held at Prairie Farms Golf Course. This course is a mostly flat run, alternating between grass and golf cart paths on a two-loop route. It was about 65 degrees when the girls were set to run and no wind. We could not have asked for a nicer day! I'm hoping all of our meets end up being this nice, fingers crossed. Both girls were looking to cut some time with splits faster than the last week.
Shelbi wanted to go for 6.35 splits for the day. She had some familiar faces at the starting line that she knew would be good competition for her; Tanae Baker from Glasgow and Ashlyn Ford from Havre. Both of these girls are strong runners and run consistently in the low 19s. Shelbi's first mile was about 6.40, right on her mark. She slowed down just a hair on her second mile but made up for it in the third mile with a 6.27 pace. She finished in 4th place with a time of 20.14, taking off 22 seconds from last weekend. Huge time cut in one week! She's already itching to get to the next course to hit that 19-minute range.
Ava came into the day wanting an 8.35 pace and to increase her pace with each mile. She did SUCH a good job of sticking to her plan! We've been stuck on that second mile the last couple of weeks and she finally broke the wall down. This hard work gave her a new PR, which she's been working at for the last 2 years, with a time of 26.50. A pretty exciting day for her.
The girls are just getting stronger each week. We've got one runner who is already up to 8 miles on her long run and intervals are starting to come easier for both of them. It's been a great start to the season and we hope it continues. We'll be off to Lewistown this Friday for the Fergus Invitational. Good luck to all of the Phillips Country teams this week!
