Pierre Bibbs and Carly Hammond, PCN Publisher and For the PCN|Oct 25, 2023

The Whitewater Penguins and Dodson Cross Country teams ran at the MHSA State C Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 21, in Kalispell. Whitewater It was on this day that Whitewater junior Shelbi LaBrie earned the State C Girls title with a time of 19:52.42. "It feels pretty good," LaBrie said. "Almost hard to believe." The closest runner was second place finisher Mya Green of Scobey (Granddaughter of Don and Becky Green of Malta) who had a time of 20:18.24, and Mia Handran, also of...

  • Whitewater Cross Country at Harlem Meet; Team Heading to State

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 18, 2023

We traveled to the Harlem Invite on Friday, October 13. This season has been a little eerie in the fact that all of our weather has been almost identical to last season's weather. Which, you don't see very often in Montana. It was nice and chilly, a light breeze, and once the sun came out around 10 am it turned out to be a beautiful day to run. We had great competition at this meet with Shelby, Sun Burst, Glasgow, and Chinook all coming to compete. Harlem has a very flat course so it is a great...

  • Lady Penguins Run In Great Falls

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 4, 2023

We headed to the Great Falls XC Invite on Friday, September 29. Ava Hanley had a week of battling the crud that is going around so she stayed home to rest up and be ready for this upcoming week. Shelbi LaBrie was our only runner for the day and planned to compete with the Varsity group of A/AA runners. They sectioned the races off into two different groups of competitors, JV & Small Schools and then Varsity & Challengers. I thought Shelbi's times could get her into the Varsity race so she was...

  • Penguins Run in Frazer, LaBrie Takes Second Place

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 27, 2023

The Penguins attended the Frazer Invite this last Thursday afternoon. If you’ve never been to a XC (cross country) race, this is the one to hit. It’s located outside of Frazer right next to the river. It is a beautiful area. It was pretty windy for most of the afternoon, but it seemed to die down when the girls started their race. Ava Hanley was planning to stick to her 8:30 split time with this course having three challenging hills. Shelbi LaBrie planned on easing into her first mile after struggling last week in Lewistown with her side aches....

  • Penguins Run at the Fergus Invitational

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 20, 2023

The Whitewater Cross Country team competed in the Fergus Invitational held on Friday, September 15, at Pine Meadows Golf Course in Lewistown. This is a course that we have never been to before. I had heard it has some challenging hills and a good course to hit. This was an understatement. Besides being beautiful, the course had nothing but hills, steep and rolling. The athletes zig-zag through the entire golf course, winding into the trees and next to a hidden pond. It's kind of set up on the...

  • Penguins Continue Strong Running in Havre

    Carly Hammond, PCN Correspondent|Sep 13, 2023

The Penguins set out for Havre on Saturday for the Havre Invitational held at Prairie Farms Golf Course. This course is a mostly flat run, alternating between grass and golf cart paths on a two-loop route. It was about 65 degrees when the girls were set to run and no wind. We could not have asked for a nicer day! I'm hoping all of our meets end up being this nice, fingers crossed. Both girls were looking to cut some time with splits faster than the last week. Shelbi wanted to go for 6.35 splits...

  • Penguins Run in Kalispell at the Flathead Invitational

    Carly Hammond, PCN Correspondent|Sep 6, 2023

The Lady Penguins headed to Kalispell last Friday for the Flathead Invite. This meet is held on Rebecca Farms, an equestrian course on the Northern side of Kalispell. You are surrounded by Mountains. It's a beautiful area to run. The girls run out in an open field and the entire course is on grass. Some of the grass was actually pretty tall so the most challenging part of the race was navigating the tall grass and uneven ground. It's a two-loop course that has one hill that is about 400 meters...

  • Penguins Kick off Season at Wolf Point Invitational

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Aug 30, 2023

The Penguins kicked off their season heading to Wolf Point on Friday. We've had ten solid practices so I was pretty confident the girls would have a successful first meet. I think this is the hardest I've run kids in the first couple of weeks, but I've got two returning veterans that I knew could handle the miles and they hung in there. Ava Hanley was my only runner on Saturday morning as Shelbi LaBrie was not feeling well. It was an absolutely beautiful day for a run, about 65 degrees and no...

  • LaBrie Third at State! Wisher Eighth!

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 26, 2022

The Whitewater Penguins and Dodson Coyotes Cross Country teams competed at the 2022 State C Cross Country Meet in Missoula. Shelby LaBrie led the Penguins with a third place finish. LaBrie finished seventh in the 2021 State C Meet. This year LaBrie was joined in the top ten by teammate Samantha Wisher who was eighth with a time of 20:52. Ava Hanley was 81st with a time of 28:43, and Kandra Cummings had a time of 30:31 and was 95th. The team finished in eighth place. For Dodson, Mason LoneBear...

  • Four Penguins Head to State C

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 19, 2022

On Friday, October 14th, we attended the Harlem Invitational. It was a nice crisp morning with a little bit of a breeze, just the kind we like! After a hard week of practice, the girls were ready for their final regular season meet. This one really lets me know if they are ready for the state meet. We've been working on consistency the last three weeks and I was anxious that they would do well. The Harlem course is a very flat course to run, so we adjusted our splits accordingly. This is a...

  • Penguins at Frazer, Malta Meets

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 12, 2022

We attended the rescheduled Frazer race on Tuesday, October 4, and the Malta Invitational on Saturday, October 8. It was a full week for the girls. I ended up giving them Wednesday and Friday off for some extra rest days. They were feeling pretty heavy by Thursday. Both races had beautiful weather and great competition for the girls. There weren't as many runners as usual, but when you have Scobey and Glasgow at the meets it doesn't really matter. In Frazer, Samantha Wisher finished in 4th...

  • Penguins at Crazy Mountain Run

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 5, 2022

We drove to Big Timber on the morning of Saturday, October 1, at 5 a.m.! It literally rained the entire drive there, and the entire drive home. I can’t complain because everyone needs it. I’m glad I checked the weather forecast and warned the girls to bring extra clothes because within 10 minutes of being at the course, we were all soaked from head to toe. The whole golf course was flooded. The girls ran through puddles and in the rain the entire race. They were actually pretty excited about it. There weren't as many runners there as I ant...

  • Penguins Change Course, Compete at Havre Invitational

    Carly Hammond, PCN Correspondent|Sep 21, 2022

We made a last-minute decision to head to the Scottie Invitational instead of the meet in Missoula. They have been canceling a lot of sporting events with the recent wildfires that have been surrounding the area and the poor air quality. We thought it would be wise to stay in the area and for sure get a meet in, instead of risking the trip to Missoula with a chance of a cancellation. We had some great weather for the morning, so Ava Hanley and Shelbi LaBrie were ready to get some good times on the Scottie’s course. As the girls are warming u...

  • Penguins Compete at Havre Invitational: LaBrie takes third with new best, Wisher fourth

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 14, 2022

The Whitewater Penguins attended the Havre Invitational on Saturday. I was very optimistic going into this meet. The weather was going to be absolutely gorgeous and the girls had a solid week of practice. We arrived at the course and the girls did their run through and began doing form run at about seven minutes before ten o'clock. I was kind of just hanging out around the golf house when I overheard the Havre coach quickly tell the Malta coaches that the girls race is first not second. This was much to our surprise as the schedule had said we...

  • Whitewater X Country 2021

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Sep 8, 2021

I've got four girls out for cross country this season; Shelbi Labrie, Ava Hanley, Kendra Cummings, and Sammie Wisher. Three of these girls are veterans with Shelbi being our newest addition. We've had three solid weeks of practice and attended the Poplar Invitational this previous weekend. We went into the meet with the mindset of slowing ourselves down in order to balance out our split times. One of the hardest things to do as a runner is to be disciplined enough to SLOW down in order to cut...

  • Penguin XC at State

    Carly Hammond, PCN Correspondent|Oct 28, 2020

The Whitewater Penguins attended the state cross country meet in Kalispell, MT this previous weekend. The Penguins ran on Saturday, October 24, day two of the event. Coach Cary Hammond said that the team knew that the meet was going to be a cold one and so the team trained all week outside in the elements to prepare for the conditions. "Friday night before the race we even got a short run in in the snow," Coach Hammond said. "Saturday morning ended being 12 degrees with the wind chill and the...
