The first month of the season has nearly run its course. What little green was left on the prairie vanished weeks ago, hiding out of sight over the creek banks. The fog was so heavy early Sunday morning that you couldn’t see a block away and then it moved away a little. In March of 1920, a group of Malta businessmen including Sandy Pray, Harry Whitcomb, Burt Moylan and B. H. Koke formed a corporation called the Fur Specialty Farming Co. Stocks were sold in Malta and the surrounding area. The old co-operative store on Front Street was set up to house a special variety of fur-bearing rabbits. Sandy Pray went to Fargo, N.D., to attend a special course on raising rabbits. Over 250 rabbits of every size and color arrived in Malta in early April. We have had so many flies, way more than we’ve had in other years. And they really bother the cows too! I’ve only drank two that were in my coffee. Oh, brother, that’s bad now! The North Country Mavericks volleyball team hosted the Malta M-ettes in Whitewater last Thursday, September 21, and the Mavs won 3-0. The Malta Cross Country Team didn’t have a doubleheader, but we doubled up this week. We had a meet in Shelby on Monday and then another one in Frazer on Thursday, all in the same week. It is not very often we participate in two meets in one week, but that’s how the schedule worked for us this year. And we capitalized on the fact that we had a free weekend, so we focused on getting in some good solid practices this past week and that paid off. The Penguins attended the Frazer Invite this last Thursday afternoon. If you’ve never been to a XC (cross country) race, this is the one to hit. It’s located outside of Frazer right next to the river. It is a beautiful area. It was pretty windy for most of the afternoon, but it seemed to die down when the girls started their race.
