M-ettes Pick Up Win Over Harlem, Fall to Fairview and Wolf Point

The Malta M-ettes volleyball team went 1-2 last week, picking up their first home win of the season.

That win was a 3-1 victory over the Harlem LadyCats last Thursday, September 14.

"It feels good to get our first dub (win) at home on our own court," M-ette senior captain Elly Anderson said. "I think we could've done it against Glasgow but it felt great, it was good for us."

The M-ettes then fell 0-3 to the Fairview Warriors on Friday, September 15, in Malta, and 1-3 to the Wolf Point Lady Wolves on Saturday, September 16, in Wolf Point.

This week Malta will be on the road for a few games as the M-ettes first head to Whitewater on Thursday, September 21, to face the North Country Lady Mavericks. The JV teams will kick things off at 4:30 p.m. Malta will then go to Glasgow to face the Lady Scotties on Friday, September 22, with the C-squads squaring off at 1 p.m. Their final game of the weekend will be a clash with the Shelby Coyotes in Shelby on Saturday, September 23, starting at 2 p.m.

In Malta's win over Harlem, the scores were 25-19, 18-25, 26-24, and 26-24.

The PCN caught up with Anderson and fellow senior captain Addison Ulrich after the win. Anderson was asked what the key to their victory was.

"I think we stayed together," Anderson said. "We pushed through. When we were down, we had a forward mindset and we just kept going and didn't give up."

Denvyr Tuss had 11 of Malta's 49 kills. Tuss also had three of Malta's four blocks. Kendall Clausen had seven of Malta's 17 aces. Neva Jacboson had 23 assists and Elly Anderson had 24 digs.

The game served as Little M-ette Night where younger volleyball players had the chance to hang out with the Malta M-ette volleyball players earlier in the morning and hold a pair of scrimmage games in between games. The young athletes also participated in the starting lineup for the varsity game. Ulrich was asked what it meant to her to be a part of Little M-ette Night.

"It really means a lot because these little girls look up to us so much and being a senior, it kind of puts a lot of pressure on us to do good and be good examples for them," Ulrich said.

Ulrich was also asked about some ways that the team has improved.

"We are starting to cover really well and starting to close our blocks, and we are communicating a little bit better," Ulrich said.

The scores in Malta's loss to Fairview were 18-25, 24-26, and 16-25.

Malta was led by Clausen who had 10 kills and three aces. Jacobson had 10 assists, E. Anderson had 20 digs, and Ava Hanson and Tuss each had two blocks.

In Malta's loss to Wolf Point, the scores were 19-25, 25-20, 26-28, and 20-25.

Hanson led the charge with eight kills and four blocks. Clausen had three aces, Jacobson had 12 assists, Ulrich had 20 digs, and Tuss had four blocks.
