End of Year Stats For Mustangs

The Malta Mustangs football team was 5-5 in their 2023 campaign. The team finished second in the Northern B Conference and ultimately fell 40-22 to Three Forks in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, October 28.

The team had six athletes named to the 2023 Northern B All-Conference list, including Stockton Oxarart who was the lone Mustang named to the All-State list. Oxarart earned first team honors at quarterback on offense and first team honors at defensive back.

Junior Blaine Downing earned first team honors at running back on offense and first team honors at defensive end. Junior Treyton Wilke earned first team honors at linebacker on defense and second team honors as an "Athlete" on offense. Senior Bow Saint-Louis earned first team honors as an offensive lineman and second team honors as a defensive lineman. Sophomore Dawson Hammond earned first team honors on offense as a wide receiver and second team honors as a defensive back. Senior Clayton Hallenberg earned second team honors as an offensive lineman.

The following are a majority of the team's recorded statistics via Maxpreps.com.

Passing: Oxarart was the lone Mustang with a recorded thow. He completed 95 of his 168 attempts for 1806 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He had a QBR of 113.7. His longest throw was a 90 yard touchdown to sophomore Dawson Hammond.

Rushing: Junior Blaine Downing led all running backs with 161 carries for 1235 yards (7.7 yards per run) and eight touchdowns. Junior running back Treyton Wilke had 630 yards on 91 carries (6.9 YPR). Sophomore Trooper Stiles had 13 carries for 100 yards (7.7 YPR) and one touchdown. As a team, Malta's running backs accounted for 2146 yards and 17 touchdowns on 349 carries.

Receiving: Hammond led all receivers with 31 receptions for 724 yards (23.4 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns. Wilke had 28 receptions for 553 yards (19.8 YPC) and eight touchdowns. Stiles had nine receptions for 174 yards (19.3 YPC) and two touchdowns. Downing had seven receptions for 104 yards (14.9 YPC) and one touchdown.

Scoring: Wilke led all scoring outside of the quarterback position, with 102 points. Downing had 73 points. Hammond had 50 points. Stiles had 18 points. Simanton had 14 points. Retan had 13 points. Oxarart had 11 points (other than his 132 passing). Williamson had eight points and Darrington had six points.

Tackles: Downing had a team-leading 102 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 10 tackles for loss. Wilke had 68 tackles. Sophomore Straud Sims had 65 tackles. Junior Mason Simanton had 59 tackles and three TFL. Freshman Kenan LaBrie had 50 tackles and five TFL. Landon Retan had 48 tackles and four TFL. Senior Hunter Stolem had 48 tackles and four TFL. Hammond had 45 tackles. Stiles had 41 tackles. Oxarart had 40 tackles. Bow SaintLouis had 40 tackles. Colton Mears had 39 tackles and four TFL. Sophomore Duke Williamson had 32 tackles. Clayton Hallenberg had 25 tackles. Sebastian Best had 25 tackles. Junior Kolter Schipman had 11 tackles. Freshman Rylee Brusee had seven tackles, freshman Laytin Erickson had six tackles, junior Jonah Bucks had four tackles, freshman Jake Brown had three tackles, freshman Alexander Martian had two tackles, freshman Jackson Bleth had two tackles, freshman Skylar Gilkerson had two tackles.

Interceptions: Oxarart had four interceptions on defense and he had 12 yards total in his returns. Oxarart had one fumble recovery. Simanton had three interceptions and gained 36 yards. Stiles had three interceptions for 30 yards. Wilke had two interceptions for seven yards. Wilke and Brusse both blocked field goals this year. Hammond had two interceptions. Senior Kyle Darrington, Best, and Williamson each had one interception.

Fumbles. Defensively, Malta caused seven fumbles and recovered nine. Downing recovered two fumbles. Oxarart, Wilke, Hammond, Williamson, LaBrie, Schipman, and Hallenberg each had one fumble recovery.
