One Nation, Under God

Spring Is Around the Corner

It doesn’t take much for some of us (who am I kidding, for MANY of us) to get excited about the pending signs of spring.

It had to be my lucky day when a small miracle occurred. Mother Nature, with a grab rail on one side and a walking cane in the other, was aided by the spikey grabby little metal shoes clips attached to her feet managed to shake off the fact that there were only five (5) degrees brave enough to show up on the thermometer and wish us a nice day Wednesday.

What really set the day up for being optimistic though, was the privilege to come upon a farm equipment dealer traveling eastward to deliver a brand new bright shiny red and yellow baler. There’s a farmer that knows the crop will be good this year, good enough to invest in a new piece of equipment that better outlive the farmer.

That is said with the concept running through my mind that a younger farmer is investing in the equipment. A seasoned farmer would be more likely than not to place the purchase of such investment on the back burner, and pray and hope the one he has will hold out another season when things might be a bit clearer as to prices and the all-worshipped and longed for…moisture.

The older man knows where he can find extra bolts, some of which might be more stripped than the man who died on the cross, but by golly, he kept ‘em because there was still some good in them. He is a veteran-experienced man with arthritic hands that are calloused and leathered and can twist baling wire to make a replacement chain linkage and get ‘er going before dark.

My grandmother lived til her late 90’s and said, “…in all of my years I have never seen God send the winter without sending spring behind it.”

Well spoken, Gram, your optimistic view of the world is refreshing…then…and in my memories.

We all look forward to the arrival of spring!
