Zach Cole, son of Wink and Terri Cole in Dodson, was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, while deployed in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

Developer Mark Ereaux has converted the basement of the Marian Hills Golf Course Club House and Tin Cup Restaurant and Bar into an indoor archery range. Archers were invited to use it free of charge through March 1.

Local dentist, Dr. Michael Veseth, as part of the “Give Kids a Smile Day,” was offering free dental care. Veseth is president of the Montana Dental Association.

Ten inductees into the Malta High School Chapter of National Honor Society were Kaitlyn Smith, Riley Mortenson, Marley Manoukian, Jase Galt, Tyson Carney, Shelbie Brookie, Jenise Amestoy, Jessica Wiese, Madison Waters and Ronni Erickson. Advisor Steve Schumacher presided at his 35th and final induction ceremony, as he is retiring this year.

The 16-0 M-ettes are showing they mean business as they defeated Roundup and mercy-ruled Rocky Boy last weekend.

Six members of the Malta Mustang Wrestling team will be competing in Billings at the State B Tournament. Nolan Simanton, Antonio Lopez, Kelin King, Chase Murray, Gerome Lamb and Jordan Pierce will represent Malta.

Winners in the Saco Spelling Bee were Chandler Pippin (1st), Vincent Jolley (2nd), Devon Salveson (3rd), Jada Sudbrack (4th), with Chris DePuydt, first alternate, and Jayda Erickson, second alternate.

Some of the local cowboys taking part in the Bronc & Bulls Invitational were Guy Simanton, Ted Brown, Shayne Bishop, Shane Anderson, Tanner Anderson and Mark Pankratz.

Anthony Perry, of Malta, and Lindsey Kirkaldie, of Dodson, were selected as recipients of the Fred L. Robinson Memorial Scholarships.

Benjamin Kaluza attained his Eagle badge, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts; his project was building two redwood picnic tables for use at the local high school.

A Valentine’s Day benefit dinner will be hosted by the Whitewater community, with proceeds to go to the Ken Obie and Arvid Messerly families.

Kazz Siewing was selected as the Elementary Student of the Month for Saco; Ray Scheffelmaer was selected as the High School Student of the Month.

In a barnburner, the Whitewater Penguins came-from-behind 65-64 win over the Frazer Bearcubs.

A presentation was made at the basketball game on Thursday, where local school board members presented Saco and Dodson schools with plaques in appreciation for allowing the Mustangs and M-ettes use of their gyms for almost two years after the fire which destroyed the Malta gym.

Malta Mayor Byron Ereaux signed a proclamation naming this week as National Boy Scout Week in Malta. Attending the signing were Matt Boland, Adam Henderson, Dwight Score, Lance Lee, Ryan Kovach, Patrick Brady, Chris Mavencamp, and leaders Denis Bolland, Steve Schumacher and Chuck Zanto.

The Mustang grapplers cinched wins at the Divisional Wrestling Tournament to send 10 to State: Kris LaBrie, Ty Salsbery, Brandon Millican, Matt Sims, Jesse Brown, Eric Barthelmess, Travis Rhoads, Adam Johnson, JD O’Neil and Lance Spencer.

In a letter to the editor, a reader asked the city to define at what point a dog becomes a ‘nuisance’ since his dog “barks” and “that is what dogs do.” The reader felt his/her dog barking was no greater an annoyance than car stereos that rattle the house, trucks with “jake” brakes, lawn mowers and snowbladers before 8 a.m., and windchimes that can be heard blocks away.

Nate Murphy acquired the gun used by Kid Curry to kill Pike Landusky in a gunfight and donated the gun to the Phillips County Museum. Also presented was a piece of weathered wood that was the grave marker for Kid’s brother, Lonnie Curry.

At the annual meeting of the First Creek Community Hall, Alfred Blunt, Jr. was re-elected chairman and Ervin Crowder was elected as a new director. Other directors are Fred Veseth, Ross Wiederrick, Lloyd Knudsen and Bill French. Noel Emond and Edwin Koss police the hall and Mrs. Fred Veseth is secretary.

Boxing Coach Dan Snider said outstanding performances at the Fort Belknap Boxing Smoker were given by Dirk Henry who TKO’d Joe Desserly of Wolf Point in 25 seconds and by George Moore who TKO’d John Caraway of Ft. Belknap in 47 seconds; both were in the first round. Also winning were Clyde Darrah, Randy Cady, Grant Messerly, Delmer Henry, Al Snider and Tim Eklund.

The boxers were accompanied by Snider, Dr. Wiprud, Obert Dalby, Bob Darrah and Jack Kelly.

Chip Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Young, has received an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was nominated by Senator Mike Mansfield.

Linda Haugen will be the Malta High School delegate to the annual Girls State session in Helena.

Frank Miller found a brave grasshopper on his pickup that had the courage to make an appearance despite the chilly weather. He delivered it to the PCN and sat it on the boss’s desk as a reminder to get the news out to readers.

Marlene Hanson returned from the state Junior Miss pageant with the honors of being 4th runner-up and the Spirit of Junior Miss.

Tana Kappel, of Saco, has been selected as Girls State delegate, Sue Stahl is the alternate.

Mrs. Cloie Bronson has been having trouble with her water all week; a flowing stream into her basement is being kept to a minimal with pumps. It will be repaired as soon as the shut off is found.

Feb. 10, 1949

Funeral services for James Gordon Myers will be held at Peterson’s Mortuary, Glasgow, on Feb. 12. He is a graduate of Loring High School. Private Myers was wounded on an island in the Pacific, in action, and died July 31, 1944. His body was returned to the US last month.

The Shelby Coyotes squeezed out a 29 to 26 win over the Malta Mustangs in a low-scoring hoop fray here Saturday night. South Wagner and the Malta Juniors tangled in the preliminary match and Coach Berg’s boys triumphed in this one 35-20.

At the meeting Saturday night, the Women of the Moose initiated the following: Grace Henry, Nellie Komis, Grace Kuhr, Goldie Moir, Dorothy Perry and Addie Primeau. After lunch was served, dancing was enjoyed until a late hour.

James O’Brien pleaded guilty to first degree assault before Judge James Shea and was sentenced to five years of hard labor in the state penitentiary at Deer Lodge.

A pink and blue shower was held at the Legion Club for Mrs. Fred Thackeray.

A team and wagon owned by Dave Simpson had broken through the ice while shortcutting across Nelson Reservoir. One horse was drowned but the rest of the outfit was rescued. A truck belonging to the McNeil brothers also broke through the ice but was likewise rescued before it disappeared.

Manager Herbert Kibler had taken his town team basketball “tigers” to Glasgow where they hung a 29-17 defeat on the Valley County team.

Sub Editor McKay rattled the distant peaks of the Little Rockies with a thundering comment on a murder trial at Glasgow wherein the convicted slayer received three years in the penitentiary. Next day, in the same court, a man was handed four years for stealing a glass eyed pony…whereupon the editor propounded a riddle: “What’s the difference between taking a human life and taking a pinto pony?…Answer: One year.”
