Lady Mavericks Earn Fourth Straight District Title

The North Country Lady Mavericks basketball team won their fourth straight 3C District title last Saturday night in Glasgow.

The defending 2023 State C Champions defeated the Scobey Lady Spartans 49-27 in the 3C Title Match. To reach the championship, the Lady Mavericks defeated the Lustre Christian Lady Lions 58-21 in the semifinals.

The Lady Mavericks will face the Savage Warriors on Thursday, February 28, in the first round of the 2024 Eastern C Divisional Tournament set to be held in Glasgow.

The PCN caught up with Coach Amber Erickson during the 3C tournament and asked her about the team's impressive 20-0 record in their 2023-24 campaign. The Mavericks are currently on a 48-game win streak that started in 2022.

"I just think that these kids have a winning mindset," Coach Erickson said. "They are competitors. They go out every night and work hard every night. We work hard every night at practice to push each other. They have done a good job of not being complacent and knowing that there are things that we can get better at as a team."

"You just keep tweaking those things every game, every night, and every week, so that when you get to the biggest and most intense games that you have all of the kinks are worked out and you are ready to just roll," Coach Erickson continued.

In the Mavericks' 3C Championship win over Scobey, Paige Wasson led North Country with 23 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Teagan Erickson had 17 points, seven assists, six steals, and five rebounds.

Kendall Scheffelmear had five points and six rebounds. Shelbie LaBrie had two points and six steals.

The Mavericks gave up the first bucket of the game, a putback layup, but after a couple of possessions, a steal and fastbreak layup by Wasson tied the game. A quick steal and layup with a foul by Erickson gave the Mavericks a 5-2 lead, and the team did not look back, outscoring Scobey 16-9 in the first quarter, 11-7 in the second quarter, 11-10 in the third quarter, and 11-1 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mavericks scored 28 points off of the 29 turnovers that they forced. The Mavericks stole the ball 19 times.

In North Country's win over Lustre, the Lady Mavericks scored the first 28 points of the game. They led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter. They also outscored Lustre 12-6 in the second quarter, 16-9 in the third quarter, and 10-6 in the fourth quarter.

Coach Erickson was asked about the team's win over Lustre.

"I just think the key was everybody stepping up, being confident on the floor, hitting open shots when they were open and working as a team," Coach Erickson said. "Our defensive effort was pretty solid every night. Our zone is looking good and our man is looking really good. It is just nice to have both of those to go to."

LaBrie led the charge for the Mavs with 16 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Wasson had 15 points, six points, four steals, and two assists. Erickson had six points, 14 rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Scheffelmear had six points, six rebounds, and four assists. BaiLee McColly had five points. Josie Brown, Berkley Hillman, CharLee McColly, and Kodi McColly each scored two points. Gracie Wasson had one point.
