MHS Hosts First Annual Ryder Cup

The Malta Golf Teams took on their Glasgow counterparts in Ryder Cup Format at Marian Hills Golf Course last Saturday, April 13.

The Malta Mustangs won their matches 5.5 to 3.5. The M-ettes tied with the Lady Scotties 3-3.

The first round (front nine) was played in best ball (four-ball) format. Two Malta golfers went against two Glasgow golfers. The lowest score from each hole was taken and tallied.

Glasgow's girls defeated Malta's girls in both of the best ball groupings. Malta won their matchup in the first round 1-0.

The second round was individual head-to head. The Mustangs defeated the Scotties 4.5 to 3.5. The M-ettes outscored the Lady Scotties 3 to 1.

The PCN caught up with Malta Golf Coach Kate Webb after the event to see what she thought of the team's performance in their first ever Ryder Cup against Glasgow.

"I am very proud of our teams," Coach Webb said. "We have a lot of new golfers today that stepped it up and shot some great scores. We had some kids coming back that really showed some leadership."

Emree Stuart was an M-ette who won her second round. She was asked how it felt.

"I am excited," Stuart said. "It was a long day but in the end it was worth it because then you feel good about yourself and how you played. The first round was kind of rough for me but I did a lot better in the second nine."

She was asked how it felt to compete in the Ryder Cup, which gave a teamwork kind of feel.

"It was fun to play as a team instead of individually," Stuart said.

Senior Hunter Stolem was asked about his day.

"My front nine wasn't horrible, but it could've been a lot better," Stolem said.

He said that in the later round he was more into the flow and he was able to figure out what was working and what wasn't.

"The back nine was a lot better," he said. "No out of bounds and I stayed mostly on the runway and got a 42 on the back nine."

Stolem was asked what he likes so much about the game of golf.

"I enjoy the sport because you get to make friends and meet a lot of people," Stolem said. "You learn stuff. You learn to be patient in this game."
