Bruce beilives in hands on traing at MHS

Once again Malta High School has a new faculty member who was once a Malta Mustang. Mrs. Becky Bruce replaces Mrs. Darlene Kolczak as the new teacher for the Family and Consumer Science class. In earlier times this class was known as Home Economics, which every female student was required to take. The FCS class is now an elective course opened to all students.

Mrs. Bruce comes to us from Jefferson High School in Boulder, MT, where she taught a similar course for six years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Human Development from MSU in Bozeman and has also earned a Master of Arts degree in Education Technology. She was a non-traditional student at Bozeman during the same time her two daughters, Amy and Sally, were also attending college. Readers may remember that in 2012 Mrs. Bruce was selected as Montana's Teacher of the Year for FCS classes. She has won several other competitions in that category, and in November she will be competing in Nashville, TN at the national level for FCS Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Bruce is a great believer in hands on training, especially with the culinary skills. She will be teaching several levels of cooking skills with her goal of training students to work in the food service industry and possibly entering cooking competitions for scholarships. Being a great believer in learning useful life skills, her students will also be ironing, mending, sewing on buttons, and participating in infant care through the use of very life like baby dolls. Other goals this year include catering a meal for a MHS dinner theater, participating in practice job interviews, and each student developing an individual project to share with other students.

Mrs. Bruce has planned a busy year for her students. We are glad this former Malta Mustang has returned, and we wish her well with her classes and at the Nashville competition. Welcome home Mrs. Becky Bruce.
