Headline: Hales Bowdoin Home threatened by fire; mouse gets blamed.

A wandering mouse with an appetite for matches is being blamed for a blaze that might well have destroyed Charles Hales’ home in the Bowdoin community a few nights ago. A member of the Hales family awoke in the middle of the night to find a pile of lath and paper burning against the outside of the house. The debris came from alterations being made inside the house and it is believed matches in the pile must have been lighted by nibbling mice.

Once before a similar incident threatened the Hales home. That time a blazing kitchen cupboard was discovered in time to prevent serious damage, and again it was a mouse with an appetite for matches which received the blame.

Editor’s Note: There are no editions of the Phillips County News for October, 1964 at the Phillips County Museum. If you have any copies of those papers, the museum would love to add them to their archives.
