One Nation, Under God

Quickstart

Our springs sports season is off to a great start with three M-ettes (Darby, Sophia, and Jada) already qualifying for state in their first meet of the year.

Keenan VanWichen knocked down a hole in one in Shelby and the Malta golf team is looking great after their first meet.

Track and field doesn’t have the suspense that basketball or football does. The meets are long, cold, windy and sometimes wet, but there are a few great things about the sport.

For one, the meet gives each of the athletes a goal to meet.

When you lift weights, you don’t want to progressively get weaker. If you hit your goal of bench pressing 225 pounds as a one rep max, you eventually would like to condition yourself to lift more weight and reach another milestone.

So when a Whitewater student said she wanted to bring her shot put personal best from a 20 something to a 70 foot throw at the end of track and field, I knew it sounded nearly impossible, but it’s good to have a goal.

If she makes it over 40, she could be looking at a plaque at the end of the season in state.

When Chicago Bull Derrick Rose had another knee injury and said he planned on returning this season, many doubted. This is because he had a similiar injured that sidelined him for nearly two years before. Rose did come back to play ball, last Wednesday despite the doubters.

I guess what I’m saying is even if a kid has a goal that sounds impossible, who are we to doubt them?

Our son PJ is growing fast and it seems that at any moment he is going to stand up and take off.

He has taken a few steps unassisted and he has good balance and leg strength.

I had the opportunity to show my mother and father all of PJ’s new tricks including his fast ability to climb the stairs.

It’s pretty clear that his motor skills are not lacking, which makes me wonder...

When he gets older, if he joins track, what event will he do?

He has a good base, so maybe throwing events?

Will he be the opposite of dad and love running?

Maybe he will try golfing... He did watch the last three holes of the Masters with me last Sunday.

It should be interesting.

He also had fried chicken for the first time in his life. It may not need to be said, but he loved it. Thanks Joe’s.

I had such a great weekend this week meeting a childhood hero and scoring a new to us couch.

I’ll share more about my hero next week.
