Lady Panthers fifth at Porcupine Meet; Boys eleventh

The Saco Lady Panthers track team finished fifth at the Porcupine Invitational, hosted by Nashua at Glasgow High last Friday and seventh at the Glasgow Qualifiers Meet last Tuesday, April 14.

Alana Malmend placed first in the high jump after clearing four feet, ten inches.

Malmend finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19 seconds in her second time doing the event this year.

"It was painful, but I had to push through it," Malmend said. "My hips were hurting and I wasn't smooth with my legs getting over (the hurdles). I gotta work on my technique."

The pain Malmend was referring to were her shin splints, which was previously thought to be a stress fracture.

"During practices I end up in tears because I push through it," Malmend admitted. "It's probably not the best, but they cleared me for it, so it must not be too serious."

Malmend took fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.8 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 29.8.

Only a few days prior Malmend took second in the 100, posting a time of 14.25. She took third in the 200 with a time of 30.03 and fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.79.

Her one qualifying jump in the event was her final attempt after scratching twice before.

"I just needed to get a mark so I went behind the board," Funk said. "If I wouldn't have scratched, I would've done a lot better but I scratched."

In the Qualifiers Meet, Funk was second in the 400 (68.27), second in the 100 (14.00), third in the tripe jump (29-02) and seventh in the long jump, while posting a new personal best of 13-10.50.

Young had a personal best in javelin (54-06) at the Qualifiers Meet.

For the boys team, Chris DePuydt took third in the triple jump at the Porcupine Meet with a jump of 34-01, a new personal best.

"I just hope to get further every track meet," DePuydt said. "I just need to keep my legs together a little bit more on the jump because I could've gotten six more inches on that."

DePuydt, a freshman, said that he is adjusting well to his new height and admitted he is faster than last year and it's easier for him to jump.

He was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 15-07. He finished tenth in the 200 meter dash (28.54) and twelfth in the 100 (13.54).
