Malta Golf team, VanWichen both take first at Poplar Meet

The Malta Mustangs Golf Team had a strong showing at the Poplar Invitational in Wolf Point, despite the fact that four golfers have never golfed on the greens in Wolf Point.

The team finished first in Poplar and took second at the Whitewater invitational at the Marion Hills Golf Course in Malta last Tuesday, April 14.

Keenan VanWichen took first place at the Poplar Meet with a score of 91.

Teammate Hunter Love was one stroke behind VanWichen, but lost a chip-off and took third at the meet.

Landon VanWichen had a score of 100. Tyler Ost had a score of 100. Eli Waters had a score of 105.

The team will return to Wolf Point on May 2 for the Wolf Point Invitational and for Divisionals on May 4.

The four man varsity team consisting of Love, Landon VanWichen, Cru Darrah and Ost took second at the Whitewater Invitational with a score of 287. Chinook finished first with 256 strokes. Wolf Point was third with 313 and Glasgow Fourth with 365.

Love finished fourth with a score of 94. Landon VanWichen was fifth with 95. Darrah was seventh with 98 after defeating Chinook’s Kade Fried in a chip-off. Ost had a total of 104 and defeated Wolf Point’s Jeremy Birkoski in a chip-off.

The team will travel to the Eagle Rock Golf Course in Billings for the Shepherd Invitational tomorrow.

The Malta Invitational will start this Saturday morning at the Marion Hills Golf Course.
