Lady Mavericks pickup big district wins

The North Country Mavericks are rolling after winning a pair of district wins last weekend against Nashua and Scobey. The team will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Lustre to face Lustre Christian on Friday night and then to Opheim to take on the Opheim JV team.

In their win over the Scobey Spartans, the final score was 60-31.

North Country's half court defense was as good as it could have been stopping Scobey's offense 44 times. The team scored 18 points off of turnovers.

Tatum Moore led North Country with 24 points and five steals.

"We had a lot of mental toughness," Moore told the PCN. "We didn't take mental breaks. We didn't have many mistakes tonight. It was a pretty flawless game and a fun win to get against them."

Mickayla Johnson had 13 points and 10 rebounds in a very physical game, especially in the paint.

"You just gotta be physical back," Johnson said. "You can't let them outhustle you or out-push you. You gotta push right back and not let it get to you."

Kayleigh Cummings had ten points. Jada Sudbrack had eight points. Casity Boucher had four points. Bailey Funk had one point.

Cummings knocked down two treys that night.

"I was just feeling it, I guess," Cummings said. "I hit the first one and on the second I was like, 'I got this.'"

In the team's 49-28 win against Nashua, the team was led by Moore who scored 16 points, had seven steals and three assists.

Sudbrack had 11 points, six rebounds and four steals. Johnson had ten points and nine rebounds. Casity Boucher had six points and seven rebounds. Cummings had three points. Funk had two points and five steals. Payton Chopper had one point and four rebounds.

The team was 21-of-61 (31 percent) from the field and seven-of-eighteen from the charity stripe. It was tough sledding from three point range as the team failed to make a shot.

However the team's defense was daunting nearly shutting out Nashua in the first and third quarters, only allowing two points in the first and one point in the third.
