Dodson Coyotes defeat Harlem JV

The Dodson Coyotes had a pretty stout test last Thursday night, going against the Frazer Bearcubs in Dodson. The young Coyotes lost 79-39. The loss came after the Coyotes picked up their lone win of the season against Harlem's JV squad after an overtime period on Tuesday, January 10 in Dodson. The score was 48-43.

In the team's win over Harlem, the team was led by Shaun Ball who scored 19 points, 11 of which came in the second quarter. Tyrese Messerly had 11 points. The game would be won by a seven point effort led by David Jaynes, who scored all six of his points in that period. The team held Harlem to one single two point score in the extra period.

"David started to drive," Coach Benson said. "He found openings; he drove and got a and-one at the end."

Dodson fell down 12-8 at the end of the first quarter but instead of throwing the towel in, the team decided to fight back and went on a 15-5 run in the second, making the halftime score 23-17 in favor of Dodson.

"We were down and then we decided to play as a team," Coach Benson said. "We played better."

Both teams scored twelve points in the third quarter but Dodson was outscored 12-6 in the fourth quarter tying the game at 41 at the end of regulation.

In their loss to Frazer, the Coyotes were led by Ball, who scored 14 points, Jaynes had seven.

Coach Benson knew the challenge Frazer presented and had a plan.

"We are going to try to take the air out of the ball," he said. "Keep it slow, run our offense, get lay ups, get them in foul trouble and try to run our tempo."

Though his plan worked early in the first quarter, Frazer quickly pulled away, knocking down 10 treys that game.
