Mustangs to face Choteau

Malta hoping to punch ticket to state tourney in Billings

The Malta Mustangs are set to play the Choteau Bulldogs on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Cut Bank during the 2017 Northern B Divisional after a week of practice.

The 2017 District 2B Champions hope to be one of three teams to punch their ticket to the 2017 State B Tournament in Billings scheduled for March 9-11. To do so the Mustangs will have to make the championship game this Saturday night by defeating Choteau and then the winner of the Cut Bank, Poplar game, or the team will have to win in the consolation finals.

With teams like Rocky Boy and Shelby on the other side of the bracket going against Harlem and Glasgow respectively, making it to state might prove to be a tough task despite Malta being highly ranked.

“No matter who you play or how you are seeded, it’s going to be a dogfight,” Malta Head Coach David Costin said in an earlier interview. “There are four very good teams coming into divisionals.”

The Mustangs are hot off of a dominant season against 2B foes, going undefeated in their conference. Coach Costin hopes the team can show the same intensity they’ve displayed in the last few weeks of the season.

“If we can play with this intensity and mental focus, I think we are as good as anybody over there,” Coach Costin said.
