C Girls clash in Whitewater

The Whitewater Invitational Track Meet featured eight girls teams on a day that had wind gusts over 40 mph.

The Nashua Porcupines won the girls meet with a meet high of 104. Whitewater took second with 72. Saco took third with 54 points. Dodson took sixth with 14 points.

Nashua’s Taylor Laumeyer was the meet’s highest scorer winning four events including shot put (32-8), javelin (110-10), the 100 meter dash (13.66) and discus (96.5).

Saco’s Sydney Zeller took first place in all three events she entered, including her first event which was long jump. She won the event with her second attempt leaving a mark at 14-5.

“I just really stretched out,” Zeller said.

Zeller went on to win high jump by clearing 4-8. Her closest competitor in the event was Hinsdale’s Mia Rimoldi who cleared 4-2.

No stranger to long distance runs, Zeller was a 281 champion in cross country last September for her old high school Sanborn Central-Woonsocket in South Dakota. She won the 800 at the Whitewater meet with a time of 2:57.5.

“I want to qualify for state in at least one event,” Zeller said when she was asked about her goal this season.

The Whitewater Lady Penguins were led by freshman Hannah Anderson who took first place in the 400 meter run. She had a time of 1:24.84. In the first 200 runners faced a tough wind and on the back end a gust of wind.

“Mrs. Wasson always tells us to keep our heads down when we are going into the wind so you can get through it a little bit better,” Anderson said. “I knew that once I turned the corner I would be propelled pretty far.”

Anderson took second place in the 200 with a time of 33.88. She also took fifth in the 100 and sixth in long jump with a time of 14.59 in the 100 and a leap of 12-5 in long jump.

“It’s been going pretty well,” Anderson said. “I always start out feeling like I’m going to mess it all up but then I end up feeling pretty good afterward.”

Saco’s Bailey Funk won the triple jump with a length of 30-6. Funk took second in the 100 with a time of 14.07 and third in long jump with a leap of 13-9.

Lady Penguin Kayleigh Cummings took second in shot put with a throw of 30-2 ¼. She took second in javelin with a throw of 96-9. Cummings also took third in discus with a throw of 81-8.

Dodson’s Christina Jaynes scored all 14 of Dodson’s points as the team’s lone athlete. She took second in discus with a throw of 85.7. Jaynes also took third in shot put with a throw of 27-10 ¼.

Isabella Lawless took second in the 1600 with a time of 7:24.94. Lawless also took second in the 800 with a time of 3:07.16 and fourth in shot put with a throw of 27-10 ¼.

Serena Sanguins took third in the 400 with a time of 1:58.52. Sanguins took fifth in discus with a throw of 67-1 and sixth in shot put with a throw of 21-11 ½.
