Malta golfers gear up for several meets

The Whitewater track teams flew into the cold and windy Malta Athletic Club Track Invitational last Tuesday, April 25.

The Penguins placed seventh as a team with 32 points and the Lady Penguins took twelfth with a score of 12.

Junior Trace Simonson led the Penguins taking first place in discus with a throw of 132-1 ½.

“I threw pretty well in discus,” he said.

He admitted that discus was his favorite event, an event which he has won each time he has entered at any given meet this season.

“It’s the one I’m best at,” he said.

Simonson took second in triple jump after a length of 36-11 ¼. He also took second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.14. He was fourth in javelin with a throw of 138-10 and sixth place in high jump after clearing a personal best of 5-4.

He was able to post a personal best in high jump; despite the fact Malta’s high jump area is different than at many other meets.

“The runway for it is a lot smaller than most of them are,” Simonson said.

His last event was the 300 hurdle event and on a cold and windy day, with the track conditions being different than at other meets.

“I just have to run as hard as I can,” he said. “It’s a little different on a dirt track than an all-weather track but I just have to run as hard as I can.”

In the Scott Qualifiers meet on Monday, April 17, Simonson won discus with a throw of 139-3 and the 300 hurdles with a time of 23.55, a season best.

The Lady Penguins were led by Kayleigh Cummings who won shot put with a mark of 32-8 ½. She also took fourth in javelin with a personal best of 99-9 and ninth in discus with a throw of 84-8.

Cody Scheffelmear took fifth in high jump after clearing 5-4. He also took twelfth in the 200 with a time of 28.04.

Bella Lawless took seventh in the 800 with a time of 3:08, a season high. She also posted a time of 1:19.12 in the 800 and a throw of 28-8 ½ in shot put, taking twelfth in both events.

Hannah Anderson took thirteenth in the 400 with a time of 1:20.34.

Luke Lawless posted a new personal best of 38-0 ½ in shot put.

Serena Sanguins posted a time of 1:59.24 in the 400, a throw of 22-2 in shot put and a throw of 59-10 in discus.

“My running was better,” Sanguins said.

Sanguins has set a goal for herself this season.

“I want to try to make it to state in discus,” she said noting that her personal best is 78 feet.

To qualify in any given meet she has to clear 106-9.

“That’s how much I need to get to qualify,” she said. “I try to watch myself to see what I do wrong.”

She shared details of things she needed to improve on her technique.

“I kept scooping it,” she said. “I wasn’t reaching up to the sky and I scratched once.”
