One Nation, Under God

A collector of recipes

Malta's David Veseth hopes to share his favorite recipes with you

David Veseth is a man of many hobbies. Give him a number, 1 through 56, and he can tell you which county in Montana the number represents on license plates. Give him a cool, dry morning and he will spend it biking from his home on Central Ave to the City Landfill and back.

One of the hobbies David has added to his repertoire of late is that of collecting recipes. From 4B’s Classic Tomato Soup to Egg Nog Pie and from Skittle-Marshmallow Yams to Play Dough, David has spent time over the last several months finding his favorite recipes and hand-writing them on sheets of loose-leaf paper before laminating them and placing them into binders.

"I have a friend that I know I am going to be sending recipes and I would also like to leave them at Hardware Hank and leave them there for people for free," David said. "I would also like to leave them at the Phillips County News."

Besides those local businesses, David said he also hopes to share his recipes with the Westside Cafe for the cooks there to use at their leisure.

"Maybe they could use them for their salad bar and stuff," he said.

David recently obtained a lamenting machine for his recipes (he was having them laminated at the PCN prior to getting the machine) and of the dozens of recipes he has archived, he said Penny's Carrot Salad, David's Italian Pork Chops and Francie's Yam recipe are particular favorites.

"I often make that at my house," David said (admitting that the dish was well received by his mother and father.) "They liked the pork chops as well, sometimes I make them once a month."

Aside from the binders and sharing the cooking methods at locations in Malta, David said his big dream is to have the recipes published in Natural Awakenings Magazine and to distribute them at the Havre Day Activity Center.

When not working at Dairy Queen in the morning or at MOI in the afternoon, David said he often likes to listen to records on his phonograph — his favorite vinyl is Bob Sings — or taking care of his sunflowers that often tower over Central Ave.

"I have already planted them," he said. "Maybe I need to find a recipe for them."
