Boys compete at Eastern C

The Saco Panthers, Whitewater Penguins and Dodson Coyotes were all represented in the Eastern C Divisional in Wolf Point last Thursday.

The Penguins took eighth with 27 points and Saco tied for tenth with 8 points. Scobey won the meet with 129 points. Richey-Lambert took second with 108 and Savage took third with 59.

Whitewater junior Trace Simonson became a first time divisional champion, winning discus with a throw of 137-3.

Simonson also took second in the 300 hurdles and high jump. His time in the 300 hurdles was 43.30 and he cleared 5-8 in high jump.

“I would look for Trace to do well in the 300 hurdles,” Whitewater Head Coach Charlene Wasson said.

Simonson will run in the fast heat and with three hurdlers set to run in the slower heat, Simonson has a chance to place.

Simonson posted a mark at 37-9 ¼ in triple jump and had a throw of 135-5 in javelin but didn’t place high enough for state in either event.

“His last throw was probably his best but it went out of the sector line,” Coach Wasson said. “It would’ve been his best throw this year.”

Coach Wasson believes that Simonson can post a new best only having to worry about discus in the first day with no other events until day two.

“He has discus on Friday and the hurdles and high jump are on Saturday,” she said.

Saco Ty Murphy qualified for state by C qualifying standards in pole vault earlier this season but he also took fourth in the event at the Eastern C after clearing 11-0. Teammate Josh Salveson cleared 8-0 but did not qualify for state. Salveson also posted a mark of 14-6 in long jump.

Saco’s Brady Albus took fourth in the 800 with a personal best of 2:11.63.

Whitewater’s Cody Scheffelmear cleared 5-4 but placed seventh in the event. He also posted a mark of 32-10.50. He also took tenth in the 800 with a time of 2:35.34.

Saco’s Short relay team consisting of Murphy, Albus, Salveson and Dustin Ostrom took tenth with a time of 52.57.

Dodson’s David Jaynes took eighth in shot put with a throw of 37-7.

“David gives his all every single time he goes out,” Dodson Head Coach Tianna Bloomer said.

Dodson’s Jasper Doney posted a personal best of 7:13.09 in the 1600. Though he did not place, his coach was pleased with his effort.

“I’m proud of him for not giving up on running,” Coach Bloomer said. “As much as he hates it and knows he is not the fastest one out there, his goal every single time that he goes out there is to PR (record a personal best). He has bettered his time in every single meet that he has competed in.”
