August 16,1917

About 20 cars from Dodson well filled with boosters from the 1917 Phillips County Fair arrived in Malta Tuesday and spent the noon hour in Malta. The band rendered several selections while here and the bunch left after dinner for Bowdoin and Saco. The 1917 fair at Dodson will be a hummer and already several good racing numbers have been secured and a number have also entered cars for the auto races.

Since the new garbage removal ordinance went into effect, the residents of Malta have been able to keep their backyards and alleys in pretty good looking condition. The garbage cans are emptied every week.

Messrs. John Tressler, Henry Plott and A.G. Arnot have been selected as delegates to the state meeting of the Masonic Lodge in Helena next week. The delegates from the Eastern Star Lodge are Mrs. W.H. Chase and Mrs. E.E. Turpin.

Our attentions were called to the fact that in some parts of the town where new sidewalks have been constructed, that teamsters, finding crossing barred have driven across the new concrete walks in front of residential properties. In one instance the new walk was badly damaged by the loaded wagon. The identity of the person is not known in the particular instance. He deserves prosecution for trespassing. Most everyone has a wholesome regard for the efforts made to improve their particular bit of the community, but once in a while someone gets thoughtless or down right indifferent and takes every possible liberty with other fellows property. This class can help make Malta better by being more particular in their actions.

Big Hill of spuds

Thirteen and one-half pounds of potatoes from one hill! N.J. Cummings says he dug the 43 red potatoes from between two small spruce trees near his home. Fourteen of the potatoes were large. The largest weighed one and three eights pounds and the smallest measured about one inch in diameter. This bonanza can be seen in the News office window.

Robbie Knievel to soar over wagons Sunday at Buffalo

While county officials in Twin Falls, Idaho, are trying to figure out if Robbie Knievel, son of Evel Knievel, is ever going meet their demands for his planned skycycle jump over the Snake River Canyon, the motorcycle daredevil is preparing to attempt another record - jumping 20 covered wagons at the Sleeping Buffalo on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m.

The Buffalo covered wagon jump will be Knievel's second jump in just over a year. On July 4, 1991, he set a world record for height as he skyed over the Sleeping Buffalo Barn casino, 26 feet high and 155 feet in distance.

State-record catfish replica on display at FWP office

The public is invited to Fish, Wildlife and Parks' Region 6 headquarters in Glasgow to view a replica of the state-record channel catfish caught last year in Nelson Reservoir.

The 29.71-pound catfish was caught last May by 10-year-old Eli Waters and his grandfather Jim Jones, both of Malta, and broke the previous record by more than two pounds.

Saco's loss is Malta's gain

Fresh out of college two years ago, Anna Fahlgren had to undergo the pressure of being interviewed as the new art (K-12) and English (HS) teacher for Saco Schools.

This week, she had to undergo the same process - this time as the new English (HS) and art (7-12) teacher at Malta High School.

"It's already a lot different than Saco," she said. "Just in having a lot more students, but I am looking forward to it."

Fahlgren is a Glasgow High School graduate and the daughter of John and Mary Fahlgren of Glasgow and the granddaughter of the late Swede and Doris Fahlgren of Malta.

Editor's Note: Congratulations on 10 years, Mrs. LaBrie.
