This week marked the departure from Malta the first contingent to answer the military call. A few months ago, not a thought pondered upon these young men of the duties of today. Hundreds of people gathered at the station to give the boys a rousing farewell. Cheers, good wishes, and hearty farewells made up the program and nothing was left undone to impress upon these young men that the hearts of every American was with them and that they would never be forgotten.

Snowy egret sighted at Bowdoin Bird Refuge

Either way off his course or else just a prospective papa looking for an inland home for his next year's brood away from the excitement of war industry and blackouts, a snowy egret was sighted last week at the wildlife refuge state park at Lake Bowdoin.

According to Vernon Ekedahl, manager of the wildlife refuge, the habitat of this bird is in Florida.

Editor's Note: According to the Bowdoin Bird List, published in 2008, the snowy egret is still occasionally seen in the spring and fall and sometimes in the summer, though it is "uncommon."

18 and 19 year old may soon be in service

New draft legislation to make 18 and 19-year-old youths eligible for armed service topped a program mapped out last week for the waning months of the 77th congress by Chairman Sabath, D., Ill., of the house rules committee.

"In all likelihood," Sabath said in an interview, "congress will be asked this session to permit the drafting of 18 and 19-year-olds and will give its approval."

In his opinion, he added, the 18-19 group contains "the finest fighting material available."

Trusty at Pen steals warden's daughter's car

Western Montana peace officers were searching for John Brandon, 30, who escaped from the state penitentiary at Deer Lodge early Tuesday morning.

Brandon, a trusty, escaped while working at the warden's residence. He left in a car owned by Mrs. Raymond E. Lewis, daughter of Warden Dudley Jones.

The car was a Buick sedan, carrying Montana 1942 license number 5-3535.

Brandon entered the prison May 21, 1940, to serve a 10-year sentence for grand larceny.

Editor's Note: Brandon would be apprehended 60-miles south of Dillon, Mont., in October. He was driving a stolen J939 Hudson sedan (which he ran into a fence when police gave chace) and in the car he had a "shotgun and vacuum," according to the Montana Standard.

Have a skunk problem? Don't call Herb

Malta's skunk catcher has resigned after only one week on the job!

That's not quite the truth. In last week's paper Herb Friede was mentioned as trapping skunks and disposing of them. The fact that Herb had been doing this on his own was brought up at a council meeting and the News reporter got the impression that Herb would provide this service for anyone having a skunk problem in town ...Herb has been besieged with customers wishing to use his services since.

To set the record straight, Herb has trapped a few skunks on his own but does not wish to perform this service for the general public.
