Malta Public School's December School Board Meeting

Malta Public Schools held their final regularly scheduled meeting of 2017 on Wednesday, December 13.

During the Administrative Reports, Malta Elementary Principal Tad Schye reported that there was an attendance of 240 students in the month of December. Being specific to the school’s largest classes, he reported a total of 43 first graders and 38 second graders.

The school held the Geography Bee on Friday, December 15.

The Christmas Program was held on Friday, December 22.

The school held an end of year assembly, which is a part of the Behavior Initiative that rewards students for good behavior throughout the school year.

Partners in Education took students with perfect attendance to watch a movie at the Villa Theatre on Friday, December 15.

“Last year they picked Home Alone,” Schye said. “This year, I guess in following sequence they picked Home Alone 2.”

Malta Middle School (MMS) Principal Shawn Bleth announced that every MMS student has access to the Infinite Campus feature on the school’s website.

“I am pretty happy to see that it is getting used,” Bleth said.

The numbers are lowest amongst the sixth grade parents as far as usage of the Infinite Campus site. Bleth believes this is because the program is new to many sixth grade parents.

According to Bleth, the students should have no excuse for not knowing which assignments are due and when.

The school is taking steps to making their main website more ADA compliant, using Havre and Ronan Public Schools as an example of the possible new site. It may be possible that the new site will be up and running during the Summer or Fall of 2018.

Bleth announced that the school had held their Geography Bee, an event that was won by eighth-grader Aidan Kaasa.

The school held their Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 14 at 7 p.m.

The school hosted the Northeast Basketball Tournament on Saturday, December 16 at 9 a.m.

Malta High School principal Scott King, had the high school coaches give reports of their teams to the board.

M-ette Basketball Coach Nate Hammond announced that there were 17 kids in the program and announced that the team was young this season.

Assistant Coach Travis Somerfeld announced that the Mustangs basketball team had 18 kids and that there have been injuries affecting the team’s ability to field a C-Squad team.

The Board approved the hire of Tanner Anderson for the Middle School Boys Basketball coaching position.

Superintendent Kris Kuehn proposed the idea for Handicap Seating, which would require a cut out area of the first few bleachers, two in the Southweast and two in the Southeast. This would help Malta High School with ADA Compliance.

The project would cost the school $7,840.

The board also approved the installation of handicap door openers on the main doors on the south side of the building.

The board discussed the possibility of removing the school’s elevator, which costs the school anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 quarterly.

The board signed resolutions to update signature card regarding the retirement fund and student activity funds at First Security Bank.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 10 at the Malta Middle/High School Workroom.
