100 years ago

April 11, 1918

Mrs. CM Porter died at her home in Malta after an illness of several weeks.

Three new school districts were created in Phillips County. They were district 32, 33 and 34. District 32 is still in existence, 33 was abandoned last December and 34 was abandoned so long ago, no one recalls the date.

Miss Mildred Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Wilson of the Freewater community, was married to Curtis Smith at the family home of the Rev. HG Cowan.

The farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Thompson north of Malta was destroyed by fire. Only a few articles were saved by Mrs. Thompson who was home alone at the time the fire started.

One of the jurors in the District Court case of the State versus Johnson came into the jury box in an intoxicated condition. Judge John Hurley immediately adjourned court and placed the offender in the hands of the sheriff until the following morning.

Tony Doyle was sentenced to two years in state prison for killing a beef on the range the previous winter.

A call has been issued for 36 more men from Phillips County for service of the armed forces.

April 8, 1943

Dodson name is Jones mayor at the city election

Dudley Jones was elected mayor of Dodson at the city election Monday. Jones succeeds OE Goodson to the position

Ira Lauren and EL Griffin we're reelected alderman from ward number 1 and nails Morris was reelected for ward 2.

11 men accepted from US Army service

Eleven men have been excepted for services in the US Armed Forces for the April selective service card, according to notification from the local board office.

The men are Merle Levern Kaasa, John M. Thorson, Clarence Howard Nybo, William Arthur Marquardt, Henry Donavan Sloan, Richard Michael Zwicharowski, Peter Thomas Amyotte, Zane Oscar Brandon, Alfred Fredric Vanek and Joseph Norman Mavencamp.

All the men were accepted for army service and will depart in the near future for Fort Douglas, Utah.

13 boys take test for Army-Navy training

Thirteen boys, 10 from Malta and three from Saco, took tests at Malta High School last Friday for admission to army navy college training. The test was given by J. H. Lesselyong, superintendent of Malta Schools.

Mr. Lesselyong stated that the school will not be notified of the results of the examinations.

April 11, 1968

Walt Haynes named champion auctioneer

Walt Haynes of Phillips County auction service won the title of 1968 champion Montana Merchandise Auction at the fourth annual contest held at Glasgow on April 3 and 4.

Each year the Montana State Auctioneers Association hold its Montana auctioneers contest in conjunction with its annual convention. The contest was originally set up to determine the auctioneer most qualified to represent the association at the annual world championship contest.

The merchandise contest was active, Haynes reports. Auctioneers sold new merchandise to the public at an actual sale. The crowd responded with fast bidding and the sale was a success. The buyers also balloted on whom they would like to have conduct their sale.

The 1968 results were merchandise auctioneering: Walt Haynes, first; Carl Westermark of Shelby, second, and Con Christian Of Conrad, third. In livestock auction airing: John Kujath of Lewistown, first; Bob Thomas of Billings, second, and Jack Ellis of Roundup, third.

Alice Andrews: I'd ask him to vote against any government funding for abortion.

Amy Poulton: I'd ask him, are you going to lie in your terms?

Manson Frye: Do you think you have a chance to get the things done you want to do this congressional session?

Wanita Anderson: What are you going to do about the fees charged to the ranchers for grazing lands?

Butch Humbert: Why would anyone want to be a politician?

Question: Where would you rather be right now, other than here, and why?

Katherine Ereaux: Beaver Creek, because that's where I was born and raised, and my baby has lots of open space to play in.

Tom Seele: I'd like to be in Wyoming roping with my son, Larry, because I like roping with him!

Maynard Crasco: Probably on a beach in Hawaii! To take a vacation!

Marilyn Fritz: In New York City! It's big, lots of things to do and all the excitement!
