Varsity falls in Scobey, JV defeats Opheim JV

The Coyote Den has seen it's first action of the 2018-19 high school basketball season and the Coyotes JV squad did not disappoint.

The Dodson Coyotes JV team defeated the Opheim Viking JV 52-44 team on that day, Friday, December 14. The Coyote Varsity team was defeated by the Scobey Spartans 74-41 in Scobey on Saturday, December 15.

In the JV win over Opheim, the Coyotes were led by Juliun Benson, who scored 20 points. Alex Werk scored 16 points. Kadin Racine had six points and Dwight Werk had six points.

According to Benson, the key to their win was driving to the hoop on offense and playing solid defense.

Racine told that the team could have done better that night.

"Our effort could have been better," Racine said. "If we would've boxed out we would've gotten a lot of rebounds."

The Coyote offense struggled to score early netting only four two-point field goals in the first quarter, while only giving up nine points. The Coyotes scored 22 points in the second quarter, which included a 12 point effort from Werk. The Dodson Defense only gave up five points, giving the Coyotes a 30-14 lead going into the half.

Dodson's JV also struggled to hit free throws, but ultimately sank a few near the end of the game.

"I just need to work on them more," Benson said.

Racine explained the importance of JV games.

"It is pretty good because usually some of us don't get to play much on varsity but we have a lot of JV games so we get to play a lot," Racine said.

This year's JV team has had a few years of experience together with nearly all athletes having played in middle school together. The team has been in a couple of 3C District title games in previous years.

In the Coyote's Varsity loss to Scobey, Corbin LoneBear led the team with 13 points. Shaun Ball had 12 points. Jeramiah Benson had six points. Tyrese Messerly had six points and Sam Main had two points.

The Coyotes were outscored 43-19 in the second half after trailing Scobey 31-22 going into halftime.

The Coyotes are scheduled to play Nashua in Nashua on Thursday, December 20. The JV Game will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity game will start at 7:30 p.m. The Coyotes are then scheduled to face Turner at home on Friday, December 21, at 7:30 p.m. after the Lady Coyote game.
