Sheriff's Office no longer to offer Concealed Weapon permit classes

The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office will no longer be providing Concealed Weapon Permit Classes, but rather ask applicants to be bringing the weapon they plan on carrying concealed to the Sheriff’s Office and demonstrating to the Sheriff, or his designee, familiarity with a firearm.

“When I did a little research with how other sheriff’s offices are doing their concealed weapon permits, I decided to eliminate providing the class,” Phillips County Sheriff Jerry Lytle told the PCN.

When you pick up the application at the Sheriff’s Office, you will see the legal requirements necessary to obtain a Concealed Weapon Permit. If you wish, you can still complete training courses offered around the state or satisfy the requirements of MCA 45-8-321(5), by showing their familiarity with the weapon, according to Sheriff Lytle.

“It wasn’t required that the Sheriff put on the course so I thought I’d let the professionals do it instead,” Sheriff Lytle said. “I would feel comfortable with people showing me their familiarity with a firearm by just bringing in their weapon and doing a short demonstration with it, which would fulfill that requirement instead of having to take the class.”

The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 406-654-2350.
