Lady Mavs defeat Brockton 71-18

The North Country Mavericks split a pair of games last week as they saw a contrast of foes.

The Lady Mavericks made short work of the winless Brockton Warriors last Saturday, January 25, in Whitewater, defeating Brockton 71-18. The Lady Mavericks fell 51-33 to the Glasgow Lady Scotties on Friday, January 24, in Glasgow.

The team will take on the Nashua Porcupines on Friday, January 31, in Saco. Though North Country defeated the Porcupines 59-18 on Friday, January 3, the Lady Mavericks plan on keeping up their intensity on both sides of the ball.

“We focused on the little things,” junior Kaitlyn McColly said. “We focused on transition. When we don’t have tough defenders, it’s when we have to focus on the little things the most. He have to keep things at our level.”

McColly led the Lady Mavericks in the team’s win over Brockton with 17 points and five rebounds. Kia Wasson had 16 points and nine steals, and Jaycee Erickson had 12 points, six assists, and four steals.

The North Country defense stood tough, not allowing more than five points in any given quarter. Brockton scored five in the first quarter, four in the second quarter, five in the third quarter, and four in the fourth quarter.

North Country’s offense overwhelmed Brockton. The quarter by quarter points scored were 25, 20, 14, and 12. The Lady Mavs played their reserves throughout the fourth quarter, and it seemed the reserves didn’t miss a beat.

“They really came onto the floor and didn’t bring down our tempo,” McColly said. “They matched it and did great.”

In the team’s 51-33 loss to Glasgow, the Lady Scotties defense proved to be a problem for the Lady Mavericks, who were held to five points in the first quarter and third quarter.

“They were tough,” Erickson said. “They had really good pressure and it was hard to take the ball up, so we had to find other ways to get it up the floor without turning it over.”

Erickson led North Country with 13 points. Wasson had six points. Kaitlyn McColly had three points and 12 rebounds. Kelsee Cummings had four points and five rebounds.

“We had great defense, but we just couldn’t get our offense to flow,” McColly said.

When asked what the team would work on, Jaycee mentioned that the team would work on defense, given that it is the Lady Mavericks’ goal to hold their opponent under a certain amount of points.

“And free throws,” McColly added.
