Saco, Whitewater Track Teams compete, finally

The Whitewater Penguins and Saco Panthers track teams competed at the Glasgow Invitational on Thursday, April 1, and fared well against over 20 others teams ranging from Class A to Class C.

The Hinsdale Raiders won the event with a total of 52 points. Class A's Havre Blue Ponies were second with 51 points. The Plentywood LadyCats were third with 50 points. The Savage Warriors were fourth with 40 points. The Wolf Point Lady Wolves were fifth with 37 points, and Scobey was sixth with 35.5 points.

PENGUIN BOYS

Senior Beau Simonson and sophomore Hunter Ellis were the lone Penguins that day. Simonson scored the team's four points, taking fourth in shot put with a personal best of 42-7.50. He also posted a personal best of of 115-4 in discus.

Ellis posted a throw of 21-0 in shot put.

PANTHER BOYS

The Panthers Track Team consisted of junior Dylan Brown and freshman Marshall Caves.

Brown set personal best in many of his events including a throw of 29-6 in shot put, 99-01 in javelin, and a time of 30.46 in the 200. Caves posted a time of 15.44 in the 100, 32.22 in the 200. He cleared 7-6 in pole vault and had a throw of 68-3 in discus.

LADY PANTHERS

The Lady Panthers scored highest amongst local girls' teams. Taking ninth at the event.

The Lady Panthers were led by sisters Jaycee Erickson and Teagan Erickson, who both placed in multiple events.

Jaycee won the javelin event, with a personal best of 109-02. She was also third in pole vault, clearing 8-6. She also set a personal best of 2:36.86 in the 800-meter run.

Teagan was the first Panther to qualify for state by winning the high jump with a personal best of 5-4.

"I really threw my arms up because my form is not that great, so I have to work on my jumping ability," Teagan said. "My jumping ability is what helped me clear the bar."

Teagan also took third in the 800 with a time of 2:35.02.

Josie Brown was seventh in the 200 with a time of 30.40. Brown also took ninth in pole vault by clearing 6-0 and eleventh in the 100 with a time of 14.60.

Abby Yeska had a throw of 77-9.50 in discus, 53-7 in javelin, and 26-.5 in shot put.

"Things went pretty well," Yeska said after throwing discus. "My favorite event is discus because I can throw further than most people."

Yeska said that she had missed participating in track in 2020 and was happy to be back.

LADY PENGUINS

The Lady Penguins were thirteenth amongst teams at the meet, posting a score of 19 points.

Whitewater was led by seniors Kia Wasson and Kelsee Cummings who eached placed in events.

Wasson took third place in the 3200, posting a time of 12:57.05, placing her right under her first goal time of the year.

"I was shooting for 13 minutes and I got 12:57, so I was happy," Wasson said. "I had a PR of 12:51 my freshman year, so I am hoping to beat that."

According to Wasson, the running conditions were perfect, not windy, and not cold.

Wasson also took third place in the 1600 with a time of 5:57.04.

Wasson leads a group of runners that each have experience running in Cross Country, but prior to last Thursday's meet, only she and teammate Hannah Hanley had run in high school track.

"I like having people to run with at practice, so it's nice," Wasson said.

Cummings took third place in shot put, with a throw of 33-3.5. She also posted a throw of 61-8 in discus.

Freshman Kendall Scheffelmear heard her name called over the speakers, having placed sixth in triple jump with a mark left at 30-8.75. Scheffelmear was thirteenth in high jump after clearing 4-4.

Samantha Wisher took seventh place in the 3200 with a time of 14:16.80. Wisher also had a time of 6:50.26 in the 1600, and a leap of 9-6 in the long jump.

Freshman Ava Hanley was eighth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.14 and tenth in long jump after posting a leap of 13-0. Her 100 was timed at 15.25.

Freshman Paige Wasson was ninth in the 400 with a time of 1:09.25. She was also ninth in triple jump, leaving a mark at 28-6.75.

H. Hanley was tenth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 59.32. She also posted a time of 32.56 in the 200 and a time of 15.91 in the 100.

The team's short relay team consisting of Kora LaBrie, Scheffelmear, Ava Hanley, and Paige Wasson were 9th with a time of 57.78. The Long Relay consisting of the same runners placed tenth with a time of 4:58.91.

Sophomore Kendra Cummings had a time of 16:43.34 in the 3200 and ran the 1600 in 7:39.06. Kendra also participated in throwing events, leaving a mark at 52-5.5 in discus and a mark at 40-06 in javelin.
