2nd ‘Historic Walk Through the Past’ lets PC residents meet characters from history

Colorful characters from Phillips County’s past traveled forward in time Sunday afternoon to entertain history enthusiasts.

Kay Hould, president of the Phillips County Historical Society was excited to include the “Historic Walk Through the Past” at the Malta Cemetery in the H.G. Robinson Home and Garden Tour again this year.

“It’s the most interesting project we’ve done since I’ve been president,” Hould said. But it’s still in its infancy, we’re working to improve it.”

A young couple was visiting the cemetery Sunday with flowers, Hould said, completely unaware that the tour was going on, or that John Ebaugh, a man who ran a wool warehouse in town in the early 1900s, was being honored.

Hould approached them and quickly realized that the young man, Skyler Kinkaid, a student from Rocky Mountain College, was the great-grandson of Ebaugh.

Hould said she recognized him as Rusty Kinkaid’s son when she saw Skyler standing over his grandma, Anna-Mae Kinkaid’s grave.

She jokingly said “Would you like to meet your great-grandpa? He’s here.”

And he sort of was. Played by Dr. Jim Curtis, Ebaugh had been entertaining crowds all day, with tales of the frontier and a brush with death at age 15 when Ebaugh ran into vigilantes who wanted him hung.

Local wrestler takes part in Florida National Duals action

One minute 15-year-old Nolan Simanton of Malta was “doing chores” the next minute he was headed for Florida by way of Sidney to compete in the Florida National Duals in Orlando.

“I was out doing chores and working with my 4-H steers when Coach (Ryan) LaBrie called and asked my mom if I would be interested in going to the camp and then on to Florida with Team Montana,” Nolan said.

“Man, was I surprised,” he added. “I started packing that night to get ready to leave for Sidney and begin my training for the duals.”

‘Opportunity’ lured businesswoman to Malta to buy local bowling alley

Linda Melrose says she’s just a single girl trying to get out of the big city and looking for a good business opportunity.

When a friend who is in real estate pointed out that there was a bowling alley for sale in a town in Montana called Malta, she said why not.

Melrose, who actually was born and grew up on a ranch in Casper, Wyoming, is completing the paperwork to purchase the Mustang Lanes. And although the closing date isn’t until July 15, she said an agreement has been reached with the present owner of the facility, First Security Bank.

Melrose, who had recently been living in Phoenix, said she was looking for an opportunity to move to a smaller community. She has owned several businesses including bars and motels, and has sold real estate, but the bowling alley business will be a first for her.

Placing business on the Internet allows locals to compete in larger market

Competing in a large market, but living in a small town are definite benefits of successfully marketing your business on the Internet.

Malta residents Kenny and Lana Ulrich are well into putting a shingle on the Internet as they have a website offering various topics.

“It was my wife’s idea to go on the Internet and use the world wide web to market the products we sell,” Ulrich said. “The other trick is to make a site that comes up fairly quickly.”

Ulrich said that around March there were 19 million home pages on the Internet and that today there are over 65 million, an increase of 20% a month.

Towns and County License Liquor Establishments

Nineteen saloons, bars, nightclubs, and beer parlors have received licenses to sell hard liquor and beer in Phillips County for the ensuing year, according to a check-up of city offices and the county treasurer’s office. Application has been made for a county permit by a twentieth such establishment.

Permits have been issued by the city of Malta to the Great Northern Hotel, The Mint, The Pastime, The Stockman, Lobb, Smokehouse, and Murphys and to the Malta Club and the VFW Club. In Saco, the Big Dome Hotel, Mission Bar, and Hetrick’s Bar, and in Dodson the Bluebird Inn and the Cowboy Bar have been licensed.

County permits have been issued to Kid Curry Inn, the Bar D Bar, and to establishments at Loring, Whitewater, and Zortman. Application for a permit has been made by the Stine brothers of Malta.

Prisoners Of War Leave Malta For Journey Home

Two hundred fifty German prisoners of war, who have been stationed at Malta during the beet thinning operations on the county farms, left Saturday on the first stage of their journey home after years of war and imprisonment.

The majority of the prisoners at the Malta camp saw action and were taken prisoner in North Africa in the early months of World War II. Some have been prisoners for nearly seven years and most of them have lost all contact with their families in Germany. Many of them have learned to speak and read English. Some are Nazi-minded. Others maintain they have been violently opposed to Hitler’s regime for years, being forced into the army by fear of mistreatment of their families. Among the 250 prisoners were artists, professional men, day laborers, farmers, teachers, skilled mechanics, and college students. Men of 50 and boys of 20.

For those that follow the archives for the 100 and 118 years ago stories, the paper apparently skipped a week. There were none listed for this week. Apologies for the week off, but they are back in for next week.
